This Is Alex Greenwich (On The Right), Thanks To Him Same Sex Marriages Are Now Recognized In NSW.
About Time Australia, Hopefully This Is A Step In The Right Direction For Marriage Equality
In case you didn't already know Australia is one of the only countries in western society that doesn't have same sex marriage laws. Of course there was that time when it was briefly passed into legislation until the abhorrent Abbott administration got it reversed by the High Court of Australia. But there may be hope that this country is actually progressing in the right direction, in NSW at least. Alex Greenwich who is an Independent Member for Sydney, last week won support for his Relationships Register Amendment (Recognition of Same-Sex and Gender-Diverse Relationships) Bill, which now means that same-sex couples can declare themselves legally married in an official context, if they were married outside Australia.
This change acknowledges that a growing number of NSW citizens must travel overseas to marry the person they love, while waiting for the Federal Government to legislate for marriage equality.
The NSW Relationship Register will now ensure same-sex marriages conducted overseas will receive a level of protection and recognition in NSW, and I thank the Attorney-General for working with me towards this outcome. The inaction of federal governments, past and present, on marriage equality remains an embarrassing blight on our nation's reputation for fairness, freedom and equality.
Even though Australia still doesn't have marriage equality, Greenwich's Bill is definitely a step in the right direction. Instead of being shunned after their same sex marriages overseas Australians will now be embraced, at least by NSW. It's only a matter of time before other states follow NSW's lead and the married LGBTI will at least be recognized as such.
