A timeless classic. This Studio Ghibli masterpiece tells the story of a 10-year-old girl named Chihiro who attempts to navigate the unfamiliar spirit world in order to save her parents and return to the normal world. If you haven't seen this one yet, then what are you doing? And if you have seen it before, then why not give it another watch? You won't regret it.

When the shy hatter named Sophie is suddenly cursed with the body of an old lady, she sets out to find a way to break the curse. Along the way she joins the wizard Howl and his entourage in his moving castle, and a love story starts to unfold. With its breathtaking visuals and handsome male protagonist (dubbed by none other that Christian Bale himself!) this movie is a guaranteed must-watch, so do yourself a favor and add this to your watch list on Netflix.

The movie that produced the studio's now iconic mascot. This Studio Ghilbi movie is a heartwarming story about the two sisters Satsuki and Mei, who find comfort and wonder in the company of the friendly woodland spirit Totoro while their mother is hospitalized. A wonderful watch if you're looking to indulge in some good ol' childhood nostalgia.

"My Neighbor Totoro"

Portraying the divide between independence and reliance though a teenager's perspective, this Studio Ghibli movie follows the young witch Kiki who decides to move to a new town on her own and start a flying courier service. A certified comfort-watch that's bound to brighten up your day and make you wish you too had a flying broomstick and an adorable cat companion named Jiji. We can all dream.

"Kiki's Delivery Service"

One of Studio Ghibli's more mature and complex movies. Princess Mononoke follows the young prince Ashitaka, who on his quest to find a cure to a fatal curse becomes involved in a war between the forest gods including the Mononoke Hime named San and the humans who take advantage of its resources. With its action-packed sequences and a theme centering around the environment, this is the perfect fit for your next movie night.

Taking place in 1930s Italy, the movie "Porco Rosso" follows a veteran WW1 pilot cursed with the appearance of an anthropomorphic pig, who now spends his time as a freelance bounty hunter chasing air pirates. While it's arguably one of Studio Ghibli's lesser known animations due to its slightly unconventional plot, the movie is nonetheless a fantastic watch with an impressive balance between reality and fiction, and a great fit for anyone who can also appreciate a little bit of crude humor.

"Porco Rosso"

This story centers around the goldfish princess Ponyo who one day is discovered by the human boy Sosuke. As their friendship grows, Ponyo's desire to become a human also intensifies. While this Studio Ghibli movie is generally considered to be a bit more targeted toward a younger demographic, it can also be enjoyed by an older audience with a childlike spirit and an appreciation for the (as always) stunning visual design and uplifting message.

Taking place by the end of WWII, the story follows the two siblings Seita and Setsuko and their struggle to survive the harsh circumstances that the war has imposed on them. The movie delivers a hauntingly beautiful and melancholic narrative in its depiction of both innocent sibling love and grief, and it is bound to leave you teary-eyed at the end. Sorry not sorry.

"Grave of the Fireflies"

A sweet and real coming-of-age romance about the importance of following your dreams. Taking place in the charming suburbs of Tokyo, "Whisper of the Heart" follows the teenage bookworm Shizuku who one day notices that all her borrowed books from the library have been previously checked out by the same boy. The movie elegantly portrays adolescence and the awakening of creative talent, as Shizuku also struggles to fully recognize her talent for writing and figure out who she is.

"The Secret World of Arrietty" tells the story of a four-inch-tall family of borrowers who live secretly in another family's residence while trying not to get discovered. However, when their teenage daughter Arrietty befriends the human boy Sho, the family's peaceful existence is suddenly endangered. Following the unusual perspective of the tiny Arrietty, the movie is jam-packed with beautiful details and nature scenery. Definitely worth a watch if you're looking to satisfy your cottagecore dreams.
