Penises! They're so great, but they're all so different. Tap to play GIF Tap to play GIF Paramount Pictures Which is why we spoke to Dr. David Shusterman, a urologic surgeon at New York Urology, to get the lowdown on exactly how different penises can be. Tap to play GIF Tap to play GIF Giphy First things first, says Dr. Penis — I mean Shusterman: Penises are going to look different whether they're erect or not. You probably knew that. And just to be clear: ANYBODY can have a penis. There are four distinct types of penises, according to Dr. Shusterman. We're not talking about length, or even girth here, but shape. The Big Head Will Varner / BuzzFeed In some penises — Dr. Shusterman says around 20% of the ones he's seen — the head of the penis appears to be thicker and bigger than the body of the penis. The Curve Will Varner / BuzzFeed Some men — around 10–20% says Shusterman — have a slight upward curve to their penis. "There's a suspensory ligament that holds your penis to your pelvis and it suspends your penis a little upward." In most penises, says Dr. Shusterman, "the north-facing bend is about five to 10 degrees." Advertisement The Bender Will Varner / BuzzFeed And then there's The Bender. Where men should be concerned, says Shusterman, is if they have an extreme curvature to their penis — something in the range of 30 to 60 degrees of curvature. That's usually a sign of Peyronie's disease. What is Peyronie's disease? According to the Urology Care Foundation, it's a buildup of plaque inside the penal shaft that causes the shaft to stiffen and bend. In a few cases, Peyronie's disease will go away without requiring professional treatment. But Shusterman recommends that if your penis has an extreme curvature when erect, or has an hourglass shape (where the shaft is thick then skinny then thick again at the tip), you should get it checked out and treated by a professional. But oh, if you were wondering about how to determine a guy's penis length and thickness, THERE IS NO SPECIAL SECRET. Tap to play GIF Tap to play GIF Fox "Penile thickness is genetic and developmental," says Shusterman. "A lot of penis size issues happen in utero. The fetus develops and if you're exposed to more testosterone, your penis develops." The penis has a second opportunity to gain size and girth during puberty, when the body gets a second jolt of testosterone, says Shusterman. And there you have it — now go forth with penis power.
