Batman's ears are, according to the Western PA Humane Society where he was brought in, the result of a recessive genetic mutation. Both cat parents need to have the mutation in order for it to show up.

Batman's not the only cat with extra ears. This is Kreach.
And the first known example of a cat with double sets of ears was recorded in1938.
Batman was brought into the shelter on Tuesday and was adopted only a few hours later, by, according to ABC News, a young girl and her mother. "It was fitting because the little girl liked superheroes," Caitlin Lasky, marketing communications manager for the humane society, said.
