What Your Favorite High School Book Says About You

You have a strong moral compass and don’t blindly follow what everyone else is doing, no matter how easy it may be to do so, or how tempting. You have an intuition that tells you what is right and wrong and while you make mistakes like everyone else, you also learn from them and generally make wise decisions.

"To Kill a Mockingbird"

You are a really good student and have a strong appreciation for the classics. You don’t care about being subversive or original because, to you, there’s always a reason the popular things are popular, and you’re never afraid to like what you like. And that makes you original on its own.

"Hamlet"

You are a total romantic and tend to date around a lot, even though your favorite story involved only one true love. To you, there was no rush like the first signs of a crush or budding romance, and hey, it keeps life interesting, doesn’t it?

"Romeo and Juliet"

You are incredibly driven and obsessed with pursuing your dream career and achieving all your goals. The thought of staying in your hometown and having babies with a high school sweetheart always kind of terrified you and while you could see why other people would be fine with that, you always knew you wanted to live in a big city and try new things, no matter how stressful or difficult.

"The Bell Jar"

You have a heart of gold and are known for your compassion toward everyone. You may not have been the most popular in high school, but you were totally the kindest and were most likely in the National Honor Society for doing a billion community service hours. Seriously, you rock!

"Of Mice and Men"

You saw high school as an artificial and damaging institution where your value was based entirely on your wealth and popularity, and you struggled to find people who didn’t buy into it. Your unique mind-set and personality attract a few close, equally intelligent friends, and you wouldn't have it any other way.

"The Catcher in the Rye"

You may have been a victim of some serious gossip in your life (see: “Easy A”), or maybe you just hate the fact that everyone can follow the rules like sheep without ever raising an eyebrow. Either way, early on, you recognized the importance of questioning dated social conventions, and continue to do so now. Good for you!

"The Scarlet Letter"

You hate being bossed around by anyone, teachers or otherwise, because you in fact are quite bossy yourself. The entire structure of high school felt absurdly oppressive to you and you couldn’t wait until the day you graduated and could feel like more of an adult and make your own rules (more or less, anyway).

"Animal Farm"

You are definitely cool, and have a good amount of equally cool friends. You're always up to try something new and exciting and are generally an energetic and fun human to be around. You also have an incredibly forward sense of style and always look put together and calm, no matter how you’re actually feeling inside, making everyone want to hang out with you.

"The Great Gatsby" 

You are an unabashed bookworm and actually read all the books on your reading lists. It always bugged you that some many people used Sparknotes, and you kind of hate that everyone was always on their phones or just generally plugged in. You were always that person curled up with a good book, whether while chilling in the hallway or hanging out in the library, and it’s your own form of rebellion.

"Fahrenheit 451"

You are always making an effort to find yourself, and sometimes have friction with people who are unkind or shallow. You are incredibly sensitive and care a lot about how other people feel, but oftentimes believe that your sensitivity is not reciprocated. Hopefully, you’ve found people who understand you and make your life better, not worse.

"The Color Purple" 

The constraints established by high school may have driven you crazy, but they didn’t stifle your drive or creativity. You were always challenging authority — not always in obvious ways, but you found it highly important to be your own person and sort through your own individuality early on, and you still do so today.

"Lord of the Flies"

You played A LOT of hooky in high school/college. And have no regrets either. WHATEVER, #YOLO.

"The Adventures of Tom Sawyer"

You DEFINITELY have a dark side and really appreciated the people in high school who turned heads, even if they weren’t necessarily the nicest. You value intellect over all else in people, and probably enjoy having long debates about morality with your friends.

"Macbeth"

The thing that bothered you the most about high school was the cliqueness, and how unpleasant people can be when in a group. Sure, you have your friends, but you prefer to ride solo as often as possible and flow your way through several friend groups instead of being attached to the hip with anyone.

"The Crucible"

You have a vivid imagination and appreciate anything that would fuels your creativity, whether in a fun, positive way or in a dark and disturbing one. Your mind is always somewhere else (oftentimes, the future) and you quite like it that way.

"1984" 

You are, first and foremost, a realist, and you have no trouble being interested in what is real and right in front of you. Some people may label you a square, but you are comfortable with what you have and you know how to be happy with it, and you should feel proud because there aren’t many like you out there.

"The Grapes of Wrath"

You have a fantastical and dark imagination, and are excited about anything that stands out from the ordinary. Though your particular interests oftentimes make you feel like an outsider, you’ve never minded being different or liking what you like, and you have friends and people who totally get you.

"Frankenstein"

Your high school years were all about figuring yourself out, and while you sometimes found it difficult to really know yourself, you enjoyed the journey even more than the destination and can look back and admire the people and events that made you who you are without any negativity or bitterness.

You’re a total history nerd and have always wanted to live in a different era. You’re definitely one of those people who’s read all the "Game of Thrones" books too.

You had some close and very complicated friendships in high school, and sometimes they led you to feel really hurt or confused, but you wouldn’t trade the experiences for anything. You’re a firm believer that your friends are among the people who shape you the most in life, and you feel that that was especially true for your adolescent years.

You’re, like, a total bro. A bro who likes literature. Niiice.

"Beowulf"

You are reserved as hell and aren’t one to wear your emotions on your sleeve. You are easily bored with idle gossip and tend to busy yourself with things that both interest and enrich you, which means you are living life right.

High school was a weird, weird time for you. All you remember is your body felt super strange and you didn’t feel like you connected with anyone. Blegh.

You are really concerned with your image (though, who isn’t to an extent?) and you sometimes bottle up any confusing emotions for the sake of seeming normal and not inconveniencing anyone. The thing is, you are actually really interesting and imaginative under your cool exterior and people would love your messy traits just as much as your orderly ones.

You have always enjoyed a challenge and are really, really competitive with everyone. You have a drive that everyone envies and possess the amazing ability to zone in on a goal without wavering. Basically, everyone kind of wants to be you.

"The Odyssey"

Let’s be honest: You’re kind of a pessimist. Your glass is totally half empty and you enjoy complaining. Luckily though, you have friends who love to complain too, so it pretty much all works out.

"Ethan Frome"

You value your intellect above all else and are deeply concerned with ever being viewed by others as stupid. You are always making an effort to learn and grow, and felt pity for ignorant or uninterested people because they have no idea what they’re missing out on.

"Flowers for Algernon"

You were a budding feminist in high school and you didn’t even know it! Even though you couldn’t fully point out what bugged you about how women were represented in popular media, you knew your heart yearned for stronger and more complex female protagonists, and now you care more than ever.

"A Doll’s House"

You didn’t particularly stand out in high school, but that never meant that you were boring. On the contrary, you were really bright and quirky, and the people who did get to know you will always remember you for going against the grain and now, you totally do stand out and capture the attention of everyone around you, as you rightfully should.

"Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead" 

You are especially sensitive and intelligent, bearing as much an ability to relate and empathize with people as you do just keeping your grades up or being good at your job. You are the best kind of person — incredibly smart and mature for your age, but also emotionally accessible to all your friends and peers.

"The Joy Luck Club"

You are highly poetic and creative, and you actively question the world around you and everyone’s supposed role in it. You are drawn to anything that challenges your mind-set, especially if it is presented in an artistic and unusual way.

"The House on Mango Street"

Ummmm, you’re terrifying? Seriously, why is a story about people being hunted in the woods your absolute favorite on this list??? (Also, WHY did so many of us read this in high school? What was WRONG with everyone??)

"The Most Dangerous Game"

You are really empathetic toward others and are always interested in learning about how the rest of the world lives and perceives life. Though your environment can easily feel like a bubble, you refuse to be contained in it and have always recognized how important other people in the world are as well.

"The Kite Runner"

You have always had your priorities straight and never got lost in all the frivolities of high school, even though some of your friends did. You have the talent of appreciating what you have and being willing to learn about those who were less lucky than you in life, and people really admire you for that.

You are in your own head a lot and have a thoroughly vivid imagination. To you, the scariest thing is to live and go through each day of your life as a passive recipient of information rather than as an active thinker, and so you’re always examining everything in your path.

You are incredibly kind and loyal to your family, whether it’s your biological one or simply a family of close friends. To you, nothing matters more than connecting with the people who truly love you, and you do just that, never wasting a moment without love.

You don't require much stimulation either: Even just sitting in a park and taking in the scenery is enough for you to be happy.

You were very conscious of how everyone in high school perceived you, and your greatest fear at the time was being a social outcast and not being able to fit in anywhere or relate to anyone. Of course, you never were, because people liked you for your depth and intelligence and got along with you just fine, and now you finally realize that.

Your conviction is hard to shake, and no matter what you set your mind to, you pretty much always achieve. People admire you for your drive and imagination and will always remember you for it.

You have the amazing ability to see the meaning in all facets of life, no matter how painful or seemingly unexplainable. You are all for experiencing the full spectrum of human emotion and you're the better person for it.
