This Young Mother Shielded Her Baby From A Hail Storm And The Photos Are Too Much

Fiona Simpson, 23, said she is okay but will be a bit sore.

Fiona Simpson says she learnt her lesson about driving during a hail storm after the wild weather in Queensland smashed in her car windows and pelted her and her baby with hail.

The 23-year-old mother was driving her car on the D'Aguilar Highway about 200km north of Brisbane with her four-month-old baby and her grandmother when the car got caught up in the supercell thunderstorms that ripped through southeast Queensland on Thursday.

Simpson posted on Facebook that she parked on the side of the road when the storm became too heavy, but then the hail blew out the windows in her car.

"I covered my infant with my body to stop her from getting badly injured."

Simpson posted images of her injuries on Facebook on Thursday.

She asked for, and received, a lot of feedback on how to best cure the bruises.

"I know I'll be sore tomorrow, does anyone know of a cream of ointment that will help with the bruising? My entire back arms and head are badly bruised".

Simpson wanted to alert people to the dangers of driving through storms, and was "just so relieved that my daughter and grandmother are alright".

According to the ABC Simpson drove to a nearby home once the storm had passed and "screamed for help" until residents called for an ambulance.

Her grandmother was taken to hospital with injuries to her arm. The baby girl was reported to have only a few small bumps.

Over 9,000 properties in the region are reportedly still without power, after a tornado hit at 3pm yesterday. Storms tore through Queensland properties, with over 300 call outs for assistance from emergency services since the storms began.

Residents have reported that there were hail stones the size of golf balls damaging homes and cars in the area.
