A lot of people think of Harry Potter as a children's book, and it is, but there is some material that is way more mature than you might imagine.

6. The Cruciatus Curse (and the rest of the Unforgiveable Curses, but especially this one)

It’s hard to even think about Neville’s parents and the fact that an easy incantation could cause the most unimaginable pain and even madness. And then there's the whole complete control thing that the Imperius Curse brings to the table. Oh ya, and Avada Kedavra just kills you. So ya, that kinda sucks.

5. The Death Eaters/The Dark Mark

The fact that these guys run around in freaky as f*** masks and when they kill someone, they put a skull and snake above the spot. There’s that one part in The Goblet of Fire where Sirius Black describes coming back to your house and seeing the Dark Mark over it. Ya, that would pretty much be the worst day ever.

4. Lord Voldemort in general

Seriously, that guy is way creepier and way more sadistic than the villains in most adult books. He came out of the back of someone’s head, hacked up his soul into seven pieces, killed his only family, tortured the children he grew up with, set a huge snake on Hogwarts (see #2), made his follower cut off his right hand and spends most of his time with Nagini, a snake...that’s a little weird.

3. The Dementors/Azkaban Prison

Wizard prison is way more intense than the United States prison system, from what I’ve heard. And the fact that the government doesn’t have a lot of control over the guards (which legitimately look like walking death) means I would be incredibly motivated to be a law-abiding citizen. Skin crawling yet? Ya I’d like to hold onto my soul too, thank you very much.

2. The Basilisk

The fact that there is a huge, man-eating, death-staring snake slithering behind the walls of Hogwarts during the majority of the second book is a ridiculously scary concept. And actually being able to hear it like Harry can...yikes, that’s nightmare-worthy stuff right there.

1. The Cave in the Sixth Book

The hiding place that Voldemort chooses for the locket and where Harry and Dumbledore visit in The Half Blood Prince. There are legitimately dead people in that water (the Inferi)...loads of them, and they will kill you and turn you into one of them (sounds like the tagline of a zombie movie right?). And not only is the whole Dumbledore scene heartbreaking, but later on you learn about Regulus Black and Kreacher and what they went through. I am not letting my future children read this part until they’re in their teens...seriously though.
