6 Reasons Why Swearing Is Changing

1. People are swearing more often.

A bunch of people in society these days swear. People swear 0.3 to 0.7 percent of the time, which is around 80-90 swear words a day. These swear words can range from any severity, and that's a couple of swears per hour. Older societies didn't swear nearly as much as we do. Swearing is different than back then because we swear much more. The vulgar language we use does not affect us as bad as it affected them.

2. Words that used to be common words in the past are horrific swears now.

Django Unchained

Django Unchained caused alot of drama over the use of the "N" word. However, the movie was justified in using it because that word was used that frequently in those times. It just shows how things that used to be normal and commonplace become swears. However, these kinds of swears are different. They are much more offensive and profane, and people tend to not use them.

3. Words that used to be horrific in the past are common words now.

Gone with the Wind

Moviegoers were shocked at the use of the word "damn" in Gone With the Wind. However, if this word was used now, no one would bat an eye. "Damn" has even been used in children's movies these days. These are different from our swears because they are very minor and aren't very offensive. Our swears focus more on racism or insulting physical appearance, and these older swears don't focus on those topics.

4. Swears are used in a different way.

In the past, swearing was only used as a form of expressing one's self, and even then it was considered to be morally ambiguous. Now, it can be used for comedic effect or to push a point. Plenty of comedians in our society use swear words to get a laugh. Older societies would've seen this as horrible, but our society sees it as normal because we don't see those words as that offensive anymore.

5. Freedom of expression is more important in our society.

People want to hear what people say, and censorship is something that isn't taken lightly. Though the words are censored on T.V, the right to say them still remains. Compared to societies of the past, our society puts a lot more importance on being able to say your mind, even if it is a bit vulgar.

6. People are becoming more accepting of swearing.

Though swearing is not something that you should do in a professional environment, swearing is something that people are getting used to. Throwing a few swear words in a conversation shows that you're comfortable with the person you're talking to, and that you feel that your relationship with them is casual, instead of professional. And that's okay! Swearing is just becoming a part of everyday speech now, people are finding new ways to express themselves everyday, and these words are no different.
