    Students Spent An Evening Of Networking, LinkedIn And Ebola

    The Department of Communication hosted the Grunig Gala: The Eighth Annual Lecture, held Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2015 at the University of Maryland.

    Students of all majors networked with professionals from 16 companies, including Lockheed Martin, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Newseum, Brandlink DC, Edelman, Ketchum and more, through roundtable discussions. Professionals discussed topics including missteps and recovery in a digital age, the difference between agency and corporate public relations, and company cultures, job roles and career paths.

    During reception hour, students had the chance to take a professional headshot for their LinkedIn profile and make their own business cards. Students also took this opportunity to continue networking with other professionals.

    The event closed with the lecture’s first female keynote speaker, Kathy Lewton, exploring how miscommunication heightened the Ebola epidemic one year later. Through her engaging keynote, she taught students all about the mishaps and the importance of communication in the health field.
