The Truth About Claire's Heels In "Jurassic World"

Are the heels sexist, or simply a character trait?

Everyone has had many opinions about the heels that Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard's character) wears throughout the film.

Many say that the shoes are unnecessary and sexist. The heels should have been thrown out as soon as she went into the forest and traded for practical boots, just like Ellie Sattler wore in the first movie of the franchise.

Others think that the shoes are the true hero of the movie. After all, it takes skill to run in heels!

But think about it: if you were running from dinosaurs and trying to save your nephews 24/7, would you have time or the resources to change your shoes? No!

At the beginning of the movie, it is clear that Claire is the type of woman who will wear heels at all times. When Owen (Christ Pratt's character) calls her out on her poor footwear, she simply ties her shirt around her waist to show that she is ready for the jungle, while wearing her heels.

Yes, it is impractical. Yes, it would be easier to run away from man-eating dinosaurs in sneakers. But would it really fit her character? No.

Claire is a strong woman who embraces her femininity. Bryce Dallas Howard herself says that she believes Claire would wear heels throughout the film.

Bryce says in an interview with Variety,

"I think my dad is going to be more scared that I ran around the entire film in high heels than any dinosaur chasing after me," she said. "At the beginning I was kind of against the idea of wearing them, but then one day while looking at the terrain prior to a shoot, I just looked at Colin and said, 'I think I'll keep the shoes on.'"

The director Trevorrow says that he tried to talk her out of it, but she insisted on wearing them because it was what her character would wear.

So yes; we all know that heels are impractical. When running from dinosaurs, sneakers or boots would have been easier to wear. She did not have the time or resources to change, and it simply was not what her character would do. She would wear those shoes and wear them proud.

But the fact is, the heels are a part of Claire, and make her 10x cooler. Who can complain when she saves the day while running in heels?
