Cosmo Has Been Cancelled And These Behind The Scene Stories From Editors Are The Best
A round applause please for the rest of the crew who went to to the pub to toast the mag with Cosmos.
Cosmopolitan Australia has been cancelled...
The editorial team commemorated the closure of the iconic brand by going to lunch and drinking Cosmos earlier this week.
While former editors and staff shared some touching tributes to the sexiest and sassiest magazine Aussie girls have ever known.
"My favourite ever Cosmo shoot. I nearly lost my job over this. My bosses were not pleased that I featured Sara Marie on the cover or that I photographed her in a bikini. “It’s not very Cosmo” they said. Fuck it, I said. She’s magnificent and it’s good for women to see a woman in the public eye who isn’t a size 6 for a change and who is totally comfortable in her skin. I bloody loved that woman (still do) and I bloody love what she did for other women, blazing like a body positive comet through pop culture. ❤️❤️❤️"
"RIP Cosmo. Three years as deputy editor circa 2005 & it was this issue 👆that changed the course of my life. Snagged myself one of those “Boys Stripped Bare” (side note: he chased me) didn’t I?! And now that former AFL player is my husband. Living the Cosmo dream! The other great thing - it brought me life-long friendships & gave me a fabulous opportunity as founding editor of @womenshealthaus. Sad to see Cosmo go, too... (Confession: I still carry the picture from that shoot in my purse.)"
"A little piece of my heart died this morning to hear that @cosmoaustralia has closed 😩 Cosmo was my lifeblood for 17 years. It was where I got my first grown up job as a 20 year old and where I ended my magazine career 17 years later. I met some of my best and closest friends during those years at Cosmo and feel so lucky to have worked in the industry at a time when magazines were at their greatest. The women (and occasional man) I worked alongside at ACP/Bauer were phenomenally influential in my life as were my beloved @hearst family. We broke records, we fought for equality, we preached body love, we celebrated the sisterhood and we had a bloody good time. Vale Cosmo. You were the absolute best 💕👊🏻"
"Today @cosmoaustralia closes. I was editor #4 in the 45-year history and I landed in the job on crutches (mountain bike accident) having never owned a hair dryer, heels or makeup at 29 with nooooo idea how to pick up a dude or what Japanese straightening was. I remain incredibly grateful for everything I learned and the incredible women who guided me and supported me and worked with me. Especially Helen Gurley Brown who really changed the world. And me. Good luck to everyone on the current team moving on to fresh stuff. Know that your life has changed and you can’t unlearn how to be the wise girlfriend who holds another’s hand through the big lessons. Had to share some of these pics…a pivotal time in my life."
"40 years ago this month October 1978 my career was launched with this cover. A nervous 16yr old who hadn’t discovered her smile, and no idea how to ‘work it’!💃
Following that moment I went on to shoot at least another 6 or so @cosmoaustralia covers and a career in media. I loved that magazine! It kickstarted my career.
Needless to say, great sadness yesterday with the news @bauermediaaustralia was shutting down the Australian #cosmopolitan title with December being the last issue.
Print publishing in this digital age is a no small challenge, & I can appreciate the difficulty in making that decision.
To all the creative talents I was lucky enough to work with over the years, both behind the lens and from the editing desk...thank you for everything! ♥️ #ripcosmopolitan"
"End of an era as Cosmo closes 💖 It was the brand that gave me my start. That I moved to Sydney for, which in turn gave me my family. Cosmo gave me so many incredible, lasting, true friendships. The biggest chunk of my career to date. An awesome magical place. We didn’t call it Disneyland for nothin’. Thank you @cosmoaustralia, you were a gift x"
"End of an Era: what a sad day to hear that @cosmoaustralia the place I spent years loving every moment working there as Fashion Director is closing - a little tribute to some of my fave Aussie cover girls I shot over and over again #australia seeing print media change so much and then die is crazy to watch - our kids won't even know what a magazine is let alone how fabulous and amazing they once were and how many careers they launched. I still love a flick through a good mag. When can we start bringing them back #retro"
"End of a fucking era, this one. Where else could you work on groundbreaking campaigns, launch a podcast, interview politicians in the morning and Hollywood stars come night, enlighten the masses to sex toys but also deep dive into mental health - Cosmo Aus was a beacon and every peep that worked there cared SO much about the product. I’ve made some of my best friends in that office and am shooting back all the love to my Cosmo fam back home 💕💕💕 #putyourcosmosout"
"Thinking of my days as an Aussie Cosmo girl, as the magazine shuts down back home. A shiny, happy time with brilliant, funny, lovely women."
"Heartbroken to hear the news of Cosmopolitan’s closure. I was 21 years old and fresh off the boat from Melbourne with dreams of being a magazine journalist when I landed an internship there. I did A LOT of coffee runs, photocopying and lunch pick-ups... and I LOVED every minute of it. When I landed a full-time gig as features assistant I couldn’t believe my luck. For the next four years I’d make some of the best friends of my life, and work under women (many of them in this picture) who would become extremely influential - both personally and professionally. It truly was a special time and my heart is hurting for the team today who will say good-bye to a brand that was so easy to live and breathe every single day 💞"
