    1. The Roxbury – Roxbury, New York

    This boutique hotel in upstate New York has 43 rooms themed around various old movies and TV shows. The Wizard's Emeralds room has a yellow brick road and a poppy-decorated bathroom, while Fred's Lair is a full Flinstones experience. But the Coconut Cream Pie room might be their most unique, perfect for anyone who's wanted to sleep inside their favorite dessert.

    Shipping containers became trendy within the last decade, and now you can stay in a hotel made from them. FlopHouze is an army of renovated shipping containers, decked out with comfy furniture, a private bathroom, and kitchen. They were all built with repurposed and recycled wood, and the windows came from a school that was being demolished. If you couldn't tell, they're pretty big on sustainability here.

    Affectionately known as the Vick, this hotel has an impressive range of themed rooms. One of the most popular is the '50s suite, where guests sleep in a shiny Cadillac convertible — complete with fuzzy dice, of course. There's a projector-style screen on the wall to emulate a drive-in, a neon-lit hot tub, and a table that just screams "retro diner." Meanwhile, the Rome suite features a chariot bed and a sunken hot tub, while the French suite channels a Parisian artist's loft.

Artists stayed on-site and were given free rein to design their room as they liked. Each one has its own distinct personality — even the hallways are completely covered in bright art. There's really no way to describe the unique energy of this eclectic hotel — you'll just have to visit and feel it for yourself.

    You've probably never wanted to stay overnight in an elementary school, but we promise it's cooler than it sounds. This old school in Portland has been transformed into a cozy historic hotel, though it still retains touches of its former life. You'll see old class photos on the wall and blackboards in some of the guest rooms, along with modern upgrades like a movie theater, a brewery, a restaurant, and several small bars.

    It's Christmas all year round at this magical hotel in Tennessee!     The Liberty used to be a jail in Downtown Boston, but it has since been refurbished into luxury accommodation. It's steeped in history: One famous past inmate was disgraced Boston mayor James Curley. The on-site restaurant and bar are cheekily named Clink and Alibi (the latter lets you drink in former cells!), and the service is exactly what you'd expect from a high-end hotel. It's up to you whether you believe the rumors that it's haunted.

The mosaic floor, salt rock lights, fossil decor, and rough textured walls really make you feel like you're sleeping underground. Don't worry though — it's still got TVs, a waterfall shower, and a private hot tub. Other themed rooms include a treehouse, dragon's lair, and a love shack.

    You wouldn't expect to have a tropical getaway in the middle of Idaho, but at the Black Swan Inn you can do just that. Their Tropical Paradise suite is as close to an oasis as you'll get in middle America. The walls are covered in hand-painted murals and fake rock to make you feel like you're in the jungle. There's a 15-foot waterfall and deep tub to soak in, before you fall asleep to animal sounds. They have plenty of other themes to choose from, including Under the Sea, Mayan Rainforest, and Sea Cave.

    At this art museum/hotel combo in Cincinnati, there's no need to even leave the premise to get a hit of culture. The lobby, hallways, and rooms all double as an art gallery, with curated pieces chosen to accentuate the modern space. There are 21c Museum Hotels in a handful of locations around the country, with rotating exhibits to keep things fresh. The on-site restaurant focuses on high-quality, locally sourced food.

    If you couldn't tell by the ~chateau~ in the name, this hotel is really leaning into a French theme. What's more, 11 of their suites are decked out with another theme, most of which are regal or medieval inspired. Think suits of armor, fake stone walls, drawbridge doors, oak barrels, and, obviously, a hot tub. Other themes include Caesar, Monte Cristo, Venetian, Castaway, and Tahitian.

    Get excited, train enthusiasts: Your chance to sleep in an authentic railroad car has arrived. Located in Ronks, under two hour's drive from Philly, this quirky motel features 38 cabooses that have been jazzed up and decorated in color schemes inspired by famous American railroads (and half of them were also part of the Pennsylvania Railroad). There's also an on-site arcade, restaurant, and ice-cream parlor, and you can also stop by the barn for free movie screenings.
