18 Things You Experience Volunteering Overseas

Many of us work overseas to make the world a better place. The side-effects are alarming. Here's what you experience. http://www.jdcentwine.org #onejewishworld

    1. Becoming a “math expert” due to constantly converting time zones and conversion rates.

    2. The feeling you get when someone compliments you on your language skills.

    3. Bringing our traditions into our new communities...

    4. Feeling pride in giving back to the community in which you are serving.

    5. Mastering the art of nonverbal communication when you don’t quite have the words.

    6. Learning the local customs and culture through trial and error.

    7. Being forced to try “foreign delicacies”.

    8. Jewish geography is universal.

    9. You realize things run on a different schedule and punctuality is relative.

    10. When your kitchen looks like a 7-11 after all your friends send you treats from home.

    11. …and then eating it all in like a week.

    12. You learn to ignore the inconveniences.

    13. You learn new traditions to go along with the ones you’ve grown up with.

    14. You arrive with high expectations of making a difference,

    15. …then realize you are not there to change the world

    16. But you're connecting with the people around you and making a difference in your own way.

    17. You start to refer to the country where you are volunteering as home.

    18. And in the end, you know this was the best experience and you wouldn’t change it for anything.
