Sociable, pretty, Martha was the catch of Virginia and George’s closest best friend. George and Martha shared a romantic love story. He once wrote her that one day with her was like “seven times seven” years of happiness. Though frightened every time she heard the sound of cannon fire, Martha spent fifty percent of the Revolutionary War in camp with Washington. A leader, Martha led a multi-state effort to knit and sew shirts for nearly naked soldiers.

The son of a pacifist, Quaker iron foundry owner, Nathanael Greene broke the mold and forged his own path by joining the Revolutionary War. His honesty and reliability attracted Gen. George Washington’s attention in 1776 as they attempted to drive the British military from Boston. Instant BFFs, Washington promoted Greene and gave him the job of supplying the army, which led him in and out of the woods hundreds of times bringing much needed food and wild game. Washington trusted Greene so much, that if Washington died, Greene was to replace him as commanding general.

The owner of a colonial version of a Barnes & Noble with a Starbucks, bookstore owner Henry Knox loved military books and knew how to keep an inventory. This innovative patriot offered to go on a secret mission for his BFF. In January 1776 Knox faced the worst of winter weather and brought Washington 60 tons of cannon and artillery, which Washington used to intimidate the British out of Boston. Washington later trusted the fearless Knox to lead soldiers across the icy Delaware River in December 1776, which allowed the Revolution to live another day.

This teenager defied direct orders from the King of France and came to America anyway to join George Washington. Lafayette’s positive, eager attitude charmed Washington, who later gave him troops to lead. Loyal Lafayette kept his own ring of spies, including an African American whose intelligence gathering at Yorktown helped to end the Revolutionary War.

This injured war hero from Connecticut started out as loyal as any of George Washington’s BFFs as they battled the British redcoats. Washington even prodded Congress to give Arnold a promotion. But when others accused Gen. Arnold of mismanagement, Washington had no choice but to put him through a military trial. By the time he was acquitted of serious charges, it was too late. Arnold could only see red and had joined the British. Though he failed to give West Point to the British, Arnold committed treason. The rest of his life he preferred British tea over French wine and Sam Adams brew.

This self-made young New Yorker captured George Washington’s attention for his smarts and savvy. Hamilton became one of Washington’s most trusted BFFs and aides, who informed others of Washington’s decisions and paid the bills. After the war, Hamilton led the publicity campaign for Americans to make the U.S. Constitution the law of the land. He also encouraged Washington to come out of retirement to become president. President Washington put Hamilton’s financial know-how to good use and made him treasury secretary. Hamilton died years later in a duel with Thomas Jefferson’s vice president, Aaron Burr.
