25 Indispensable Life Lessons You Learn As A Theatre Tech

"Measure twice, cut once" is only the beginning.

Posted on

1. Black is always chic.

But if the audience can see you, something has gone very wrong.

2. Patience is a virtue.

Especially during cue-to-cue.

3. Be clear when communicating with others.

Because actors don't get subtlety.

4. Treat everyone with respect, especially those lending a helping hand.

Maria will only have her bad attitude to blame when her mic goes out during "One Hand One Heart."

5. Set goals for yourself.

And if you get a chance, try to actually accomplish some of them before the end of the run.

6. Always get a good night's rest.

(Offer not valid during tech week).

7. Organization is the key to success.

It's not that you're trying to control everyone. Well, actually, you're the SM so you better be controlling everyone.

8. Expect the unexpected.

Around every corner in prop storage is a new and ridiculous treasure.

9. Work with what you're given.

A Leatherman is only as good as its owner.

10. Nothing in life is free.

Especially not a GaffGun, so quit asking.

11. Always be proactive.

If you can do it before the stage manager tells you, they usually give you candy!

12. Be your own light.

Lest you collide with another stagehand during the quick change.

13. Not everyone has the same sense of humor.

Especially not the producers.

14. You can make anything happen if you set your mind to it.

I mean, that's why you're in tech.

15. You must be able to keep cool under pressure.

You can bitch about it later during strike.

16. Whatever doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.

Calculated risks are everything.

17. Not everything is as it seems.

18. You have to think three cues, er — steps ahead.

Otherwise you'd just be an actor.

19. Have faith in yourself and your abilities.

Mime shows in the dark don't sell a lot of tickets, amirite?

20. Fill your life with stuff that makes you happy.

Lots and lots of gaff tape.

21. Sometimes it's the things no one can see that matter most.

Dat cable run tho...

22. Some things will never really leave you.

Not even with paint thinner.

23. Try to see the bigger picture.

They can't all be Our Town.

24. Decide what you want most out of life.

"THIS!" — Every stage manager ever.

And the most important lesson —

25. You're never truly alone.

Because there is a whole crew of people out there who have your back.
