The Northern Renaissance was a period that is usually tied together with the Reformation, since they both influenced each other so heavily. These jaw-dropping paintings were created during this turbulent time. Created for a class project.

1. "The Battle of Issos" by Albrecht Altdorfer

"The Battle of Issos" by Albrecht Altdorfer, while a far cry away from the frescoes in the Sistine Chapel in terms of size, still stands a respectable 5' x 4'. There is so much going on in the painting, and the subjects almost unidentifiable, that an inscription had to be added to the top of the painting explaining the setting, the victory of Alexander the Great over King Darius.

2. "Jean de Dinteville and Georges de Selve" by Hans Holbein the Younger

The first of two painting by Hans Holbein the Younger on this list, this work is full of objects that add meaning to the painting. Most important and obvious of them is the anamorphic skull, its form so exaggerated that it's correct form can only be viewed from a certain angle.

3. "Henry VIII" by Hans Holbein the Younger

One of, if not the, most famous portraits and English monarchs in general is Holbein's "Henry VIII". Its dark tone alone says it all about Henry VIII, but elements like Henry's stance and size demonstrate his power and wealth.
