An Atheist Throws More Money At Religious Charity After They Refuse His Donation

The charity for children in crisis wouldn't accept his donation. So he decided to give them more.

The Murrow Indian Children's Home, based in Muskogee, Oklahoma, describes its mission as, "[Providing] a safe nurturing environment, spiritual foundation, and cultural experiences to Native American Children in crisis."

So it was a surprise when Matt Wilbourn's money wasn't accepted by the charity. Wilbourn runs the "Muskogee Atheist Community" and decided to make a donation on behalf of his organization. His initial $100 donation, made on August 22, was rejected once the Children's Home learned that he was donating on behalf of an Atheist group, and actually called Wilbourn to say that they wouldn't be accepting his donation because it would 'go against everything they believe in.'"

Wilbourn decided to challenge the charity – the majority of whose funding comes from the American Baptist Churches Organization – by offering $250 instead of his initial $100 donation. When the Murrow Home rejected his offer again, Matt and his wife, Keli, started a GoFundMe page to raise more money. The goal was $1,000. As of this posting, the campaign has reached $26,870. According to the page, all but $5,000 will be given to Camp Quest Oklahoma, a secular summer camp, and the remainder will be anonymously donated to the Murrow Home. If they still don't accept, the money will be given to another church, which will then donate the funds. Apparently, "Whether the Murrow Home likes it or not, they are getting $5,000 for those children from all this."

Maybe that's enough to make them accept Wilbourn's dirty Atheist money.
