30 Strangers Attend Funeral After Hearbreaking Facebook Post

All it takes to bring out kindness in others is social media and a free lunch.

If we could attend our own funerals in some sort of ghost-like state, many would expect to see a reflection of their lives and those who they spent it with. Unfortunately for 83-year-old Francine Stein, things were a bit different when she passed away on August 14, 2016.

Stein spent the last of her years in the care of a nursing home in upstate New York. There were little known facts about the woman, a past music professor at Juilliard, as she had zero listed contacts or living relatives. After she passed away due to cancer, it was up in the air as to who would plan or even attend the funeral.

Hellman Memorial Chapels contacted Rabbi Elchanan Weinbach to officiate the funeral. Weinbach was heartbroken by the thought of an elderly woman who not only died alone, but would soon have a funeral with zero people in attendance. He spoke with his daughter Ora about the issue, who promptly took to Facebook to post about the upsetting situation.

The post quickly gained traction and proved to be a success as thirty people who had never met the woman attended the funeral to pay their respects. If they had not taken time out of their busy schedules for Stein, no one would have attended the service.

Attendees helped lift and lower Stein's casket into her final resting place as they said both their first hellos and final goodbyes.

The unfortunate truth is that many people die alone everyday, however, kind gestures like those done for Stein show that they don't have to. "For the people who attended, it was an assertion of human dignity," said Weinbach.
