    12 Humanitarians Everyone Should Know About

    As the end of 2014 draws closer, we look to commemorate it as one of the most demanding years for the world’s humanitarians. From on-going conflict to outbreaks and epidemics, this year we turned once again to the everyday heroes, the ordinary people delivering extraordinary action. To honour the role of humanitarians we present our very own list of the 12 humanitarians everyone should know about, from those dedicated to solving today’s crises to those who have shaped history.     1. Dr Stella Ameyo Adadevoh – Gave her life preventing the spread of Ebola

    2. Jan Egeland – This ‘Superhero of the UN’ is probably the only humanitarian with a rock ballad written about him.

    3. Comfort Kollie – Caught Ebola working as a nurse in Liberia, survived and is now back at work. Immune to the virus, Comfort is one of the only nurses that can provide human contact to Ebola patients.

    4. Sérgio Vieira de Mello – August 19th was named World Humanitarian Day to commemorate his death, and his life serving peace.

    5. Louis Zamperini – A former Olympic distance runner Louis survived 47 days on a life raft and then two years as a Japanese POW. He spent much of his later life working with at-risk youths.

    6. Niño Robitas – A survivor of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines who risked his own life to save a family of three from drowning and is now helping rebuild his hometown.

    7. Denis Mukwege – Working 18 hours a day Denis and his team have treated close to 30,000 victims of brutal rape in the hospital he set up in the Congo.

    8. Helen Bamber – A British Psychotherapist and human rights activist who worked to help the physical and psychological rehabilitation of Holocaust survivors.

    9. Mohammed – Mohammed’s spine was struck by shrapnel in the Syrian conflict and he was told he would never walk again. After grappling with depression Mohammed now works as a peer support leader helping others with mental health issues.

    10. Zainab Salbi – Forgoing a honeymoon Zainab and her new husband set up an organisation to help women survivors of the war in Bosnia after hearing of their plight.

    11. Norman Borlaug – “The man who saved a billion lives”, an American biologist and Nobel Laureate, his breakthroughs in increasing crop yield provided vital food supply in many of the world’s most vulnerable nations.

    12. Dr Sharadkumar Dicksheet – Five time Nobel Peace Prize nominee, wheelchair-user and half paralyzed doctor who performed over 65,000 surgeries throughout his lifetime, correcting facial deformities for India’s poorest children.
