Instagram has confirmed that the follower counts have changed due to a bug.
We’re aware of an issue that is causing a change in account follower numbers for some people right now. We’re working to resolve this as quickly as possible.
A spokesperson didn't immediately respond to a request for more information on the bug or when users can expect to see it fixed.
Some people had assumed that Instagram staff were deleting inactive users.
