Which Black Best Friend From The '90s Are You?

You are quietly brilliant and always excel at everything you do. You may be introverted but you are very warm and generous and people naturally gravitate towards you. You are an extremely loyal friend with a passion that is rarely rewarded and always overlooked. This film should have been about you; if it was, you’d probably go on to do amazing things, like win a Nobel prize or something. But unfortunately, you’re just here to help the main character.

You’re strong, smart, and used to being the only black face in the room. You’re okay with people not liking you as long as you can look yourself in the mirror each night. When you’re not busy being pressed to represent your entire race, you’re on the grind, working on being perfect enough to get the respect you deserve. Your character is a strong indictment of the Black Best Friend trope, but you’re still the Black Best Friend so that only goes so far, huh?

Life is one big party and you just want to have as much fun as you can. You’re all about the latest trends, running with the right crowds, and being fabulous – if people don’t want to be you, they at least want to be your friend. No matter how fly you are, though, you’re not allowed to be as fly as the main character (audiences don’t like that).

Wherever you go, you’re the hippest person in the room. People look to you to find out the coolest things to say, wear, and do. That’s not all you are, of course – you’re also very bright, caring, and intelligent, but your co-stars are too busy using you to validate their own coolness to notice. In a 90s movie, you’re the mascot, like it or not.

You are smart, self-assured, and equipped with a biting wit. Sarcasm is your superpower and you’re never afraid to call people out on their bullshit. You’re used to being the only brown face in the room and you've learned to navigate it easily. Your character is more aware of race than black besties usually are, and you’re actually allowed to talk about race a couple of times (like, literally just a couple of times), which is rare for 90s films and shows. Still, when you talk about it, it's in a joking manner, because heavy conversations about race are such a turn off, am I right?

Rochelle from the cult classic "The Craft"

You’re a free spirit, totally into happiness, love, and romance beyond boundaries. You cling to the deep humanity in people, seeking their souls and ignoring the labels placed on them. This is cool in real life, but on screen it means that you're rarely allowed to acknowledge your race or the problems race sometimes poses. That stuff is hard. Don’t make audiences think about it.
