    15 Cool UW-Madison Arts Classes For Non-Arts Majors

    There are many opportunities for Badger students to get involved in the arts at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. One of the best ways is to take a fun class taught by our qualified professors and teaching assistants. This list details some awesome theatre and music classes.

    1. Theatre 120: Introduction to Theatre and Dramatic Literature

    Class size: 145

    Classroom time: 3 hours/week

    In this three-credit elementary-level theatre literature class, students read influential plays, attend actual stage productions and consider important themes in theatre and drama. The class focuses on developing theatre and drama analytical skills. Students can also take a four-credit version of the class that includes more writing in order to fulfill UW-Madison's Communication B requirement.

    2. Theatre 140: Voice Training

    Class size: 18

    Classroom time: 2.5 hours/week

    This three-credit elementary-level theatre class is bound to make you a better speaker. The class focuses on how to correctly breathe, use notes and tones, and use words correctly while speaking. The class relates all of these techniques to how actors and speakers use them. One of the coolest parts about the class is that the instructor caters to individual speech problems.

    3. Theatre 150: Introduction to Acting

    Class size: 5

    Classroom time: 2.5 hours/week

    This three-credit elementary-level theatre class is focused on improving acting techniques as well as professional skills. Students use voice, action and analyzation to portray realistic characters and roles.

    4. Theatre 160: Introduction to Stage Production

    Class size: 24

    Classroom time: 4 hours/week

    This three-credit elementary-level theatre class will give students a rounded look at all the elements that go on behind-the-scenes when putting on a performance. Some of these elements include scenery, costumes, lighting, sound, and stage management. Students will get to work on actual University Theatre productions while learning to combine technical and artistic elements.

    5. Theatre 357: Introduction to Theatre for Cultural and Social Awareness

    Class size: 18

    Classroom time: 4 hours/week

    This three-credit intermediate-level theatre class is especially cool because it counts toward the ethnic studies requirement at UW-Madison. In the class, students are able to explore race relations, cultural diversity, gender, sexual orientation and other topics through productions and life events. It addresses sensitive issues in the U.S. and encourages students to encounter these issues in a healthier way.

    6. Theatre 362: Drama in Education

    Class size: 16

    Classroom time: 3 hours/week

    This three-credit intermediate-level theatre class has a name that doesn't lie. When you sign up for Drama in Education, you'll learn about the philosophies, methodologies, and practices of drama in education. The class is very interactive and students actually get to practice teaching with children.

    7. Theatre 363: Principles and Practice of Stage Costume Design

    Class size: 20

    Classroom time: 2.5 hours/week

    This three-credit intermediate-level theatre class teaches students about stage costumes in a lecture and laboratory setting. Students will learn the process of costume designing and skills for readying costumes for performance.

    8. Music 101: The Musical Experience

    Class size: 80

    Classroom time: 3 hours/week

    This three-credit elementary-level music class involves the examination of different musical genres in the context of social and cultural history. Students will learn about songs, opera and musical theater, chamber and orchestral music, and jazz.

    9. Music 103: Introduction to Music Cultures of the World

    Class size: 72

    Classroom time: 3 hours/week

    This two-credit elementary-level music class lets students explore different music cultures of the non-Western world. Students are able to learn about music from Africa, the Middle East, India, Southeast Asia and East Asia. The class gives a great opportunity for students to explore music that they may not have known existed.

    10. Music 105: Opera

    Class size: 80

    Classroom time: 2 hours/week

    This three-credit elementary-level music class lets students explore the history of the opera as a social and cultural phenomenon. While exploring, students will be able to see how different operas show different expressions of national styles. Subjects range from Monteverdi to present opera.

    11. Music 106: The Symphony

    Class size: 80

    Classroom time: 3 hours/week

    This three-credit elementary-level music class gives students a chance to learn more about past and present symphony orchestras. Students listen to and examine orchestral music from Haydn to the present, as well as learn a little bit of the history surrounding great orchestral composers.

    12. Music 113: Music in Performance

    Class size: 650

    Classroom time: 1 hour/week

    This large one-credit elementary-level music class is nicknamed "Clap for Credit" by students at UW-Madison. The class is intended to help students better appreciate traditional music. During the one hour lecture, students listen to a local performer or group and answer questions about what they hear.

    13. Music 151: Basic Concepts of Music Theory

    Class size: 125

    Classroom time: 3 hours/week

    This three-credit elementary-level music class teaches students about the basic tools and concepts of music theory and composition. Students will be able to apply learned concepts to listening maps and simple composition projects.

    14. Music 205: The Big Bands

    Class size: 300

    Classroom time: 2 hours/week

    This two-credit intermediate-level music class is taught by the famous Mike Leckrone, the director of the UW-Madison Marching Band. It focuses on music groups as students study important dance orchestras from 1920-1950 and their impact on popular music taste.

    15. Music 206: The Legendary Performers

    Class size: 300

    Classroom time: 2 hours/week

    This two-credit intermediate-level music class is also taught by Mike Leckrone, but it focuses on pioneer performers rather than music groups. Students learn about essential performers who influenced popular music from 1920-1950.
