Look for the wear and tear in the yellow line!
It is easier to judge where the tube doors will open from the 'Mind the Gap' yellow line. Look to spot the dirty and worn parts on the line as that is where everybody steps on. A very reliable source (unless it's newly painted).
Follow the daily commuter!
The daily commuters will make themselves known by the way they ignore everyone and everything, wearing earphones, carrying coffee, with their head buried in a newspaper. They will be perfectly positioned to get first into the door and empty carriage.
Take the opposite train to the next stop.
At the busiest stations it is worth travelling in the opposite direction. Taking the opposite train, getting off at the next stop and then catching the tube back will surprisingly save time! You escape the chaos and are more likely to get a seat!
