You'll Never Guess What This Non-Verbal Girls First Sentence Was

Emilia, a nearly 3 year old girl who is minimally verbal finally said her first multi-word sentence....unfortunately, it wasn't exactly what her Mom and Dad we hoping for.

I'll give you a hint....your Grandmother would raise an eyebrow

As good a topic as any to open up my blog. I have 3 children. Gabriel is 5, Emilia is going on 3 and Micah is just 7 months old. It is a hectic household to say the least. My husband and I both work from home, Gabe goes to school, Emilia goes to daycare part time and little Micah sits on my hip during conference calls.

When I gave birth to Emilia, I knew right away she was a little different. When she stared up at me with those big blue eyes, I knew I had something special there. As time went on, she proved to be exactly the opposite as our first son and consistently kept us on our toes. When she hit her first birthday without saying a word…I began to worry.

But…. all kids are different, so it will be fine.

As she went through her first year, she didn't hit as many of the milestones necessary to be considered on par for her age. She often would melt down randomly, thrashing around like a crocodile clamped down on nice juicy gazelle in a death spiral.

"She is a free spirit" I'd say. "She is particular" I would explain to the lady in the checkout line staring a hole through my soul as Emilia screeches out of nowhere.

Year 2 rolled around with her saying nothing. She would babble and I would pretend I could understand whatever gobbledy-gook she was muttering. But this me tricking myself, she wasn't actually saying words. My son hit all of his milestones fine, so I saw Emilia's lack of speech and behavioral issues as nothing but a failing as a Mother.

As 2 ½ rolled in, we got very lucky. Emilia started saying very basic words like up, no, daddy, and finally mommy. Which I have to say, made me cry like a little baby. I knew this wasn't her being on track, but dammit I was so happy and proud that she was finally starting to speak, no matter how indecipherable to the outside world it might have been.

Moments ago, I heard my son Gabriel and Emilia chuckling away in the playroom. Gabe was playing the Xbox and Emilia was sitting next to him watching.

"Fuck you, Steve" shouts my son. "Fuck you, Steve" parrots Emilia.

See, Gabriel has been watching Minecraft YouTube videos and watching the folks play them…. I suppose their language isn't always the nicest. So I had this moment while listening to my two children shouting "Fuck you, Steve". My first thought was "Dammit, Gabriel said Fuck and he's going to do to school and say it and the teacher is going to think I am some sort of shit Mom". But more importantly, my daughter said her first multi-word phrase. She actually, with purpose, said a sentence. Those who have non-verbal children know exactly how exciting this experience is.

Would I have wanted it to be "Fuck you, Steve"? Perhaps not. But, when you have a child who does not do what "normal" kids do, every little achievement is everything. My daughter is starting to communicate, and it is the most joyous and happy thing in the world to me. So, Fuck you too, Steve!
