40 Products To Add To Your Shopping List If You're Renovating Your Home

At the very least, you might want to pick up a measuring tape.

    1. A flexible cleaning brush that'll pull all of the hard-to-reach pieces of lint out of the dryer the old homeowner left behind. I truly can't think of anything more satisfying, TBH.

the flexible bristle brush cleaning out the dryer vent
    Amazon

When my husband and I started to get settled into our new home one of the first things I ordered (amongst many other cleaning supplies) was this set of lint cleaners. I haven't had a washer or dryer of my own in....over a decade (???) but I know how much lint can get built up in the bottoms of older machines. I went to town cleaning out all the gunk and grime from the dryer we had inherited — the brush works fantastically!

Promising review: "Works perfectly for scrubbing the stuck lint out of the insides of your dryer. Everyone who owns a dryer should have these, they're basic safety equipment. Clean that lint, and reduce the fire hazard and make the machine more efficient. They're long enough, strong enough, and just flexible enough without being too flexible." —Winged Wolf

    2. A box of washing machine cleaning tablets you can use to easily remove any odor-causing residue from inside your machine — it's worth a shot before you consider shelling out precious dollars for an entirely new machine.

a box of affresh cleaning tabs
the clean inside of a washing machine

You can use this product on both front-load and top-load washing machines. I ran it through the old washing machine that was left in my new house (beggars can't be choosers!) and it came out nice and clean.

Promising review: "I have been using bleach to clean my machine for some time but decided to give this a try a few months ago. My very first clean with Affresh left me surprised and delighted, for not only did it clean my machine, it eliminated the nasty smell that always transferred to my clothes thanks to a buildup of mold I didn't even know about. Every month now, I toss a tablet into the drum and let it work its magic. Now my machine is cleaner than ever, and my clothes always smell wonderfully fresh. I highly recommend this to everyone." —Kelli Crawford

Get it from Amazon for $11.99.

    3. And dishwasher cleaning tablets that'll banish any residue lurking in the bottom of your machine — because, again, try what you can before running off to buy a new one. Take it from me, if you're doing home renovations you're already in the midst of running up a big tab.

Promising review: "Worked very well! We’ve lived in our home a while, and small remedies haven’t done much to help clean the dishwasher. I finally decided to give a cleaner a try, and this one worked exceptionally well. The pics above are after one use of two packs (as per instructions for a particularly dirty washer). I'll definitely be getting more when I run out to help maintain a cleaner dishwasher!" —chocobeanie

    4. A retractable measuring tape featuring an auto-lock because the phrase "measure twice, cut once" exists for a reason.

Promising review: "I am a girl who needs her tape measure. I lost one, and the tiny ones I found around the house did not do it for me. I ordered THIS ONE. It’s amazing. Some reviews called it heavy. I find it to be compact. It’s amazing: you pull the tape out, and it locks automatically. Keep pulling: it locks. The tape zips back by pressing a lever on the bottom — but very safely, not 100 mph. I love this tool!! I never review unless I’m over-the-moon impressed AND I AM." —Flypuppy

    5. A FlexiSnake tool you'll watch remove so much gunk and hair from your drains you could probably make a wig with it (but plz, don't).

Promising review: "It immediately latched onto the hair clogging my drain like some kind of an alien extraterrestrial creature. I was disgusted and amused at the same time. I tried it on my other drains and it worked well. I threw it away after one use because the hair is stuck on it and I can't stand to look at it or smell it. This thing is incredible for removing hair In your drain. —Michael

I still have almost an entire bottle left. It’s so easy to spray, and I didn’t have the same trigger issue as others. It was so easy and quick. It’s a rich, VERY deep brown, much more elegant than straight black. Please make sure you wear a mask; you don’t want to breath this stuff in." —C. Sculpher

How did you think you were going to apply the grout???

Promising review: "I've been using 20+ old caulking guns because as a DIYer I didn't know any better. Then I recently decided to upgrade and OMG this caulking gun is so easy to use and awesome. I was able to empty a whole tube of mortar repair with minimum effort and was shocked when I realized I had emptied the whole tube. Apparently I was unaware the technology for caulking guns had improved so much and this one was just a dream to use. IMO this is a must own if you do any caulking." —Bahamude

    12. A drywall repair putty, because if you're new to doing your own home renovations there's a *very* high chance you'll be happy to have this on deck.

a reviewer's wall with a big hole in it
    the same reviewer's plugged hole

Promising review: "I can't say enough good things about this product. I am moving out of an apartment that I rent, and it's required that I patch any holes in the walls from my hanging pictures. I wasn't sure how this was going to work, but WOW!! The walls are a beige color, and this putty is white, but once you wipe the excess away, you can't even tell the difference. It's so much easier than using a putty scraper. You just apply it in a circular motion, wait NOT LONG AT ALL, then wipe the excess with a damp rag. TRY IT YOU'LL LOVE IT!!" —Debbie

a gif of foam cleaning the sink drain
    Amazon

    Look at that foam go!

Promising review: "It seems counterintuitive to put a little packet down your garbage disposal to clean it, but this does actually seem to work, at least for getting out weird smells that baking soda and vinegar don't really touch. I scrub the sink down first, especially around the garbage disposal area, rinse it down, and then just follow the directions on the package. I have used it with single, large-size sinks and with double sinks — only difference is that the double sink will have blue cleaning foam rise up the drain, which you rinse away when the disposal sounds clear again. I have tried the foaming cleaner in a can, but unfortunately it stopped coming out of the can about 10% of the way through. Went back to this tried-and-true." —KS

Get it from Amazon for $3.98.

I used it to revive the outside of the washer/dryer... the shower...the bath tub... the floors... truly anything and everything!

Promising review: "For years I have heard about the Magic Eraser. From friends and family, even co-workers. Not sure what took me so long to try it out, but when I did, all I can say is 'WOW!!!' I had embedded stains from makeup and who knows what on the bathroom sink (which I scrubbed with baking soda, even softscrub with bleach, and the stains didn't come all the way out). ONE TRY with the Magic Eraser and BAM! Stains gone. Then I decided to try it on the black toaster oven, where I accidentally left a loaf of bread and the plastic melted into the top. I washed it, rubbed it and used everything I could think of, but that thin layer of plastic wouldn't budge. In comes the Magic Eraser and it came off right away. No kidding. The name says it all, because this stuff is truly magic!" —GDB

I found this package on Amazon and hoped it would do the trick for all of my furniture. When I received it (quickly no less) I thought it was too small of a package to get the job done, but once I started with the dining room table and six chairs I realized there was plenty in the package to add a dot to every bit of furniture I needed to 'shoe.' It was easy to adhere and now everything scoots like a dream." —Robyn Restel

My husband and I recently bought our first home and it has been quite the learning experience. Luckily my father-in-law has a plethora of tools, such as this vacuum, that made most of our DIYs a breeze. After ripping up a carpet and removing all the staples that had been holding it down, I was amazed we were able to use this machine to clean all the debris up in one swipe.

Promising review: "I had a 40-year-old Craftsman shop vacuum that finally broke, I was not expecting a modern one to perform as well as the old one however this new one is better in every way. The hose holds its shape under the vacuum, the wheels turn easily allowing it to move freely. It’s so much quieter than the old model, I like the cart especially as it gives a handle to allow you to move the vacuum around without bending down which for someone with low back pain, this is a great relief" —Silver

    21. A cordless chainsaw that'll help you *finally* tackle the hot mess that are the overgrown shrubs and branches in your yard. It's go-time, baby and this gadget is gonna help you get the job DONE.

a model using a green chainsaw
    The Home Depot

Me and my husband's new home has all kinds of chaos happening in regards to the backyard (and side yard, TBH). It's inevitable that we're going to have to trim a TON of wild branches and bushes and I, honestly, can't think of a more fun way to do that than with a chainsaw. This one is highly reviewed and we have it on-deck to tackle the plethora of backyard-cleaning tasks ahead of us. And who doesn't like power tools?! The added bonuses of this one is that it's battery charged (no gas!) so it's more environmentally friendly and owning one of these will cut you costs on hiring gardeners or tree-trimming service down the road. The battery lasts for about five hours before it needs to be charged again.

Promising review: "I've had a chance to use it extensively while clearing out a couple dozen mature nuisance hackberry trees. I find it easy to use and has no problem cutting full grown trees all day long. All I've got to do is make sure the chain is tight, the oil is full and the battery charged. When I got tired and had to take a break, the chainsaw was patiently waiting to get back to work. It pulls all day like a gas saw without the loud noise and fuel issues. I recommend this chainsaw without reservation." —GaryG

    Natalie Brown / BuzzFeed, www.amazon.com

Promising review: "Last night I was reborn. What is the cause of this renewed zest for life, you might ask? It was the use of the Rubbermaid Reveal Power Scrubber on my shower grout. It elevated a simple baking soda-and-water solution to alchemical proportions. My pink-tiled shower, the one that came with my scummy apartment, the one that never looks clean no matter how many hours of backbreaking labor I put in, now looks bright, clean, and full of promise. An otherwise disgusting and dated purely utilitarian part of my home is now art. TL;DR: This this is absolutely incredible." —Amazon Customer

Promising review: "Bought this during a heatwave when The Home Depot and every other store were out of window AC units — and this bad boy saved the day! It blows out COOL air (no idea how) and it's SO POWERFUL. Best $80 I've ever spent. May get another one. I'm always hot and when I use the lowest power setting on this thing, it's more than enough — and the 'high' setting is like a jet engine! and I love it! This saved the day — so I HAD to write a review about how amazing it is (and i rarely write reviews)" —sweatydude

    the heather

Promising review: "This little gem was delivered yesterday, plugged it in this morning, and it’s been working the last six hours. I cannot tell you how pleased I am. I only wish I had 220 outlets throughout the main house. I have a detached 500 square-foot insulated garage/gym/shop and it heats the entire room up in minutes. The thermostat is doing a great job keeping the space at 64 degrees (my comfort zone) it could easily keep it warmer if I would like." —Scott E. Mayer

    25. A jetted-tub cleaner, you can use to assure you never find yourself soaking in filth while trying to catch up on your me-time.

a model pouring the green liquid out of the oh yuk bottle
a reviewer's tub filled with suds and brown rust-looking suds from inside the jets

This product has changed my cleaning process FOREVER. It's extremely satisfying, disgusting, and actually works. It removes gunk you didn't even know EXISTED. Run, don't walk, to order this.

Promising review: "My wife told me we had to really clean what appeared to be a clean tub. We moved into a house where the previous home owners were not the best cleaners. She had me get this product based on reviews. My one complaint is the label needs to be bigger. OH YUK is not enough. OH YUK YOU MIGHT BARF might be better. I think someone had a bowel movement in my bath tub plumbing and this is the only product that takes it out. It appears we have seven years of crud in the pipes. The feces colored film that this products gets out of your pipes will make you a believer. The first use it released so much toot film that we felt like we needed to have another round of cleaning. After losing a bet I had to stick my hand in the water to drain it. Wiping off all the released film we filled the tub again. Just turning the jets the water seemed to be clear. However before I was going to ever get into this thing I wanted to do a second round of YUK treatment. Once again in full force it appeared that someone had the squirts in tub as sludge came flowing out of the pipes. We're going to have to run this a few times before we use the tub. Remember those pink tablets that you use to get in grade school to show you all the plaque that was on your teeth..... The product is like that for you tub." —Paul Southwick

Get it from Amazon for $16.99.

    26. A sink cleaner to help you bring an array of surfaces back to prime condition — might I suggest starting with that neglected kitchen sink?

Promising review: "I've been looking for a cleaning product that would remove the stains from my acrylic sink without damaging the surface. I FOUND IT!! This product is unbelievable. Yes, it does require an investment of time and elbow grease, but the results were amazing. It removed stains that had been in my white acrylic sink for quite some time and left the surface squeaky clean, smooth and shiny, without a scratch. If you have an acrylic sink, this is the product for you. I HIGHLY recommend it!! I'm going to try it on my mother's enamel sink next, and definitely intend to buy Hope's Perfect Sink again. It DOES live up to its name!!" —Beckett

a white utility sink with four gray legs
    Amazon

My parents have one specifically for my mom to dye her hair (sorry for, uh, publicizing that, Mom) in so she doesn't stain their nice, new sinks.

Promising review: "I purchased this as a replacement for an old but nearly exact sink that is the only sink in my garage/auto shop. This is plenty sturdy for filling pails and cleaning heavy parts. As noted by others, the faucet is especially nice. Along with the faucet, this unit would be ideal for washing dogs up to a medium size. An excellent piece for not much money. As is usual with Amazon, it was delivered in just two days." —D OC

a graphic explaining how the hub connects to various sensors
a model holding the tiny square white sensor

My father-in-law is a big proponent of this lil' gadget, so it should be no surprise we've already ordered them for our home. Don't tell him (it'll go right to his head), but I think they're actually a great idea. His basement occasionally floods and these sensors let him know. a model using the power washer to clean the inside of a wheel barrow
    The Home Depot

I got the EZClean ONE+ for my home and am excited to give it a test run as we prepare our yard for the summer. I'll be using it to clean our fence, brick patio, and the side of the house. However, I like that it as the ability to add the attachments on to tackle all kinds of yard problems as well. We looooove a versatile tool!

Promising review: "This washer is outstanding. Very easy to use and has a generous work time when using a 4 Ah battery. Not nearly as powerful as a full size pressure washer which I prefer since high powered pressure washers can strip the paint off of a vehicle. Much more powerful than a regular garden hose with a spray attachment. Makes car washing a breeze and can be hooked up directly to a hose or from a bucket with the included siphon filter. Great buy for the price." —Perry

Get them from The Home Depot: Ryobi cordless power cleaner for $79.97, chemical nozzle kit for $49.

    30. A deep cleaning brush set, essential for helping you get the grime out of your grout, shower doors, and other hard-to-reach spaces.

the double set of cleaning brushes
a reviewer's grout half cleaned using the brushes

Promising review: "I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, these brushes! I usually used tooth brushes to help me get a good clean in small areas, but I found myself really having to scrub with them which did damage to the brushes. And when that happened, the brushes were then no good to me. I was moving out of my old house and had to get it cleaned to Military Specs as it was base housing, and I needed something to really help me get it cleaned. I found these brushes and thought those might help me with the grouted areas, so for $6 I thought it couldn't hurt. As soon as I started using them, I just couldn't stop! I used them for grout, corners, cabinets, hard to reach places around my kitchen/bathroom faucets, around the base of my toilets, the inside of my windows, you name it and I cleaned it with them! I have already recommended them to everyone I know and will continue to do so. These are one of my new favorite cleaning tools. I LOVE them, and cannot praise them enough!!" —Katelynn C.

    31. Chalkboard paint, so you can write your DIY plans right on the wall instead of forever searching for that scrap paper you scribbled on that morning.

a spray can of black chalkboard paint
a reviewer's garage wall painted with black chalkboard paint

Promising review: "Very pleased! I bought 1 qt. of this to paint a chalkboard on my living room wall, which was a light beige. I only painted one thick coat to cover an 8-foot x 5.5-foot space and it worked just fine without a second coat. This took one-third, maybe three-quarters of the can so I probably could have gone bigger. My wall was not smooth like it recommends, but that wasn't a huge problem — the chalk lines just weren't super clean when drawing/writing. Promising review: "This was happily received! I gifted this to my daughter's boyfriend for his graduation from mechanic school! My only suggestion would be to include a picture/directions of everything it can do! I took a screen shot picture from this site and printed it and included it in the gift." —Roseann

    33. A magnetic tray you'll be ~drawn to~ for how easily it keeps all of your tools and parts in check.

Promising review: "This thing is great. Cheaper than smaller versions in auto parts stores, secures everything I have thrown at it. Just went out to test the magnet's strength due to another reviewer saying it couldn’t hold much, and it held a ball-peen hammer, a 10-inch socket wrench, two 10-inch crescent wrenches, a couple sockets/extensions, and some screws (tray mounted sideways). The tray obviously wasn’t designed to hold things that large but just wanted to test its abilities (and I’m sure it could hold more). Does a fine job, highly recommended." —KW

Promising review: "I have been tearing through garden beds with these. I love them and use them a lot. They have been amazing for picking out rocks and getting to roots that inhabited my beds. As a 30-year-old adult I catch myself making angry dinosaur noises as I bury the claws in the dirt and pull up. Gosh darn, I love these these gloves. They are also amazing when you get that one itch you always get when you have gloves on...they make a great scratching tool LOL." —Toxic Fox Designs

    36. Carpet shampoo to get rid of any stain or smell left behind by a previous owner (and their pets...yikes).

a bottle of carpet miracle cleaner
a reviewer using a vacuum and the product to remove the dirt from their carpet

Promising review: "After reading the reviews I thought I could at least try it, and holy smokes, this is a miracle cleaner!!! I think I have tried every cleaner on the market for pet stains and nothing ever really works on my carpets. Even if I get it off the top, it somehow comes back up. My crazy dogs hate the rain and they have one spot that they always go on when they decide they are not going outside. I have cleaned the spot probably 100 times. I cleaned this area one time with this cleaner and my spot steam cleaner and it is completely gone! The stain and smell are 100% gone, not just covered up like before, completely and absolutely gone. Miracle cleaner for sure!" —PLLane

My husband recently picked these up for one of our hall closets since the overhead light was too far to brighten the inside. Instead of having to turn the adjacent bathroom lighting on each time I need to retrieve something, now I can just open the door and the bar of light turns on! It took him literally two minutes to install.

    38. A bottle of wood polish and conditioner that'll have your antiques, cabinets, and tables gleaming like you just had them delivered for the first time.

a model holding the bottle of product

Promising review: "This stuff is absolutely AMAZING. My wife and I were getting tired of looking at our worn-out cabinets and wood paneling and were very close to paying a professional thousands of dollars to refinish it all, but then we came across this product. Our paneling and cabinets were looking rough. We have two dogs who jumped up and scratched places, we also had an area that was damaged by water spots where our dog bowls were, and several other areas that were just worn from heavy traffic. This stuff was like a magic eraser for water spots, scratches, scuffs, and any other blemish. We simply wiped the product on with a paper towel and let it sit for 20 minutes before wiping it off with a clean towel. Everything looks brand new. I'm buying a couple more so we can finish our cabinets and wood paneling. We're so glad we found this product." —Kris

    Heather Braga / BuzzFeed

My husband and I have one, my dad has one, and my father-in-law has one. This ladder is a serious trooper! We used it to clean out our gutters (see above), hang our chandelier, and get into our attic. It can easily be adjusted to extend up to either 13, 17, 22, or 26 feet (depending on which version you choose). It's a great tool for anyone with a bunch of home renovations on the horizon.

Promising review: "This has to be the coolest ladder ever invented! I bought it for its ability to become a 24’ extension ladder but just used it as a 12’ step ladder this morning. The locks are super easy to use and it only took a few minutes to figure out how to get the ladder into its various configurations. The ladder is light for its size and the wheels make it easy to push around. Better still, the ladder folds up to take up no more room than a regular 6’ stepladder. Score!" —Jason F
