25 Things All Children Of Immigrants Will Understand

To quote Hannah Montana, you got the best of both worlds.

Posted on

1. You never fully felt like you belonged to any nationality...

2. In your Western home you were a foreigner...

3. But in your “home” country you were foreign too.

4. You were embarrassed of your parents' accent in school...

5. But wouldn’t dare correct their English.

6. This wouldn’t stop them from harassing you about not forgetting the ins and outs of your home language.

7. Kids would scrunch their noses at your lunch...

8. And then go home and order takeout from your home country.

9. Everyone always has something to say like....

10. "You're from [country] so you speak [random language from the other side of the world] right?"...

11. "Wow! Your English is really good!"...

(Thanks, I've been working on it for 21 years!)

12. And people thought "you don't ACT like you're from [your country]" was a compliment.

13. It was difficult to communicate with your parents because of culture barriers...

14. And equally difficult when you found yourself wanting to use non-English words that don't translate with your friends.

15. You got told off for not being excited enough about going on "vacation"...

16. But the only vacation you ever got to take was visiting family back home...

17. Where you had to endure being kissed by countless relatives you don't remember ever meeting.

18. You've heard 1000 mispronunciations of your name...

19. And somehow even more misspellings.

(It's a mystery how they managed to do this even when it was written down in front of them.)

20. You didn't have an allowance...

21. You were never grounded....

22. Didn’t have a curfew...

23. Were never "formally" given chores...

24. Yet you were more well behaved than any of your friends.

25. Despite this, your parents compared you to every other child they know.

You still haven’t figured out where you belong but at least you know you aren’t alone.
