Japan's Largest Gang Promises It Will Come Back With Candies Next Halloween

The Kobe-based gang, or "yakuza," as it's called in Japanese, runs the tradition of giving out bags of chocolates and candies to children in the neighborhood on Halloween. In 2014, it distributed 875 sacks in 3 hours. The gang also makes rice cakes and gives pocket money (with up to about $300 cash) for the New Year.

Even though the gang is known to be involved in a variety of crimes, from running underage prostitution rings to drug trafficking and murdering a mayor in 2007. It has also been given credit for providing food and supplies during the time of major earthquakes. "The yakuza have a sense of chivalry, of public spiritedness," a member was quoted by the New York Times in 1995 after the great Kobe Earthquake.

Yamaguchi-gumi is reported to be "the largest known gang in the world" with a revenue of $6.6 billion, according to Fortune. However, the number of its members has been shrinking since the 1990s and a few branches broke away earlier this year. In the notice outside its home office, the gang apologized to children for the disappointment.
