8 Signs You're Living On Campus Over The Summer

Whether you're taking classes, doing research, or working a job or internship, living on a college campus over the summer is not always as fun as it sounds.

1. It’s so f#%*ing hot

After a long, cold winter of trudging to class through piles of snow, you looked forward to finally enjoying your beautiful campus in a temperate climate this summer. WRONG. Somehow, despite the multiple thousands of dollars you and your classmates are forking over to the school every year, they can’t afford to air condition your dorms, leaving you sweating your face off in a tiny, stuffy, humid room.

2. Sleep is surprisingly elusive

Without the heavy courseload and busy schedule of activities that accompany the regular academic year, you figured you’d make up for all of those sleepless nights by getting 9+ hours in every night this summer, right? Too bad the aforementioned heat leaves you lying awake in bed sweating at the wee hours of the morning.

3. There’s construction EVERYWHERE

Oh, you finally figured out how to optimally position your fan and managed to sleep through the night? Congratulations, here's a loud jackhammer to awaken you as soon as the sun comes up. Colleges love to take advantage of summer break as a time to perform maintenance work and keep the campus in tip-top shape, which is great. Unfortunately, it means waking up at 6AM to the ringing of a jackhammer right outside your window for a week straight.

Plus, you may have to add 45 extra seconds to your 6-minute "commute" to work/class because they've blocked off your usual path. Oh, the struggle.

4. Free meals are 100 times more valuable than usual

Free food is always alluring to college students, and in the summer, even more so. Dining halls are closed, you’re on a tight budget as always, and just thinking of standing over a hot stove or oven makes you sweat. So, you don’t hesitate to go to any variety of great lengths for a free meal.

5. You’re taking advantage of summer as a time to catch up… on all the TV and movies you missed during the year

Only a small contingency of your normal friend group is on campus with you, so coming up with ways to fill your free time can be a struggle. Luckily, there’s a zillion hours of content on Netflix just waiting to waste away your evenings. As an added bonus, you’ll actually understand all those Breaking Bad/House of Cards/OITNB references that your friends make all the time.

6. You've just about had it with giant tour groups

Everywhere you turn, there’s backwards-walking tour guides shouting to large packs of anxious parents and bored high school kids. You may even be cornered by lost parents who ask for directions/advice/your SAT score.

7. You have an unjustifiable dislike for all the campers on your campus

Your school has been infiltrated by middle school/high school kids who are staying there for summer camps, and they think they’re hot shit since they’re living on a college campus for 10 days. I don’t care if they’re the musicians/athletes/gifted minds of the future; they are loud, basic, and need to go.

8. Despite all these struggles, you know you’re lucky that you get to spend the summer on campus rather than laying on your couch at home.
