What Wine-Centric Vacation Is Actually Perfect For You?

Your perfect wine-filled getaway is Willamette Valley. Oregon's most famous wine region is where you'll find delicious Pinot Noirs, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris. Aside from the fantastic wines, the Willamette Valley has a great food scene featuring lots of farm to table cuisine. Not to mention it's just a short drive from the hipster-food capital of Portland.

If you can imagine a romantic, fairy-tale wine region, it probably looks a lot like the Loire Valley. Think: Gorgeous Renaissance castles surrounded by rivers, blossoming gardens, and green fields. You can rent bikes and travel from vineyard to vineyard, tasting incredible Sancerres, Muscadets, Chenin Blancs, and Cabernet Francs. The region's food is equally spectacular, boasting local goat cheese, pâtés, and Muscadet oysters.

The wines of Douro Valley are only matched by the dazzling — almost dizzying —views from the Marao Mountains overlooking terraced vineyards and the Douro River. You'll sip rich, tannic glasses of Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz alongside freshly baked bread with local olive oil, just-caught seafood, and spicy choriço.

New Zealand's most scenic wine region is also one of its most exciting. Head to Central Otago for fruity and elegant Pinot Noirs and stay for the scenic, welcoming vineyards. If you go, don't miss a few days in Queensland, Central Otago's neighbor. Depending on the season, you'll find amazing skiing, boating, and white water rafting.

Italy boasts dozens of amazing wine regions, but few are as spectacular as Sicily. There, you'll experience a little bit of everything: Rolling vineyards, Mediterranean weather, beautiful beaches, ancient architectural ruins, and incredible food. Thanks to Sicily's volcanic soil, the island is known for its light, slightly smoky, very acidic red wines like Nero d'Avola and Frappato.

You should visit Mendoza, Argentina's largest wine-growing region. Seated at the foot of the Andes Mountains, Mendoza's stunning vineyards are surrounded by snow-capped peaks. The most important wine is deep and velvety Malbec, which is the perfect drink to pair with a rich and juicy Argentinian steak.
