"Moonage Daydream" Is A Must-See For David Bowie Fans – Here's What We Found Out From Watching It

If you’re a fan of the iconic David Bowie, you’ve probably watched at least one or two documentaries about his life.

Well, Moonage Daydream is a new cinematic documentary that delves into the life of the legend and his creative process in the most visually stunning of ways.

Here are a few things we learned from watching:

By his own account, David had an unremarkable childhood, and it was his older half-brother, Terry, who introduced him to artists and music that changed his life.

David was really close to his older brother, who lived with his family part-time. According to David, Terry had more curiosity about the world than any other person and introduced him to art and culture outside the currency where he grew up, from John Coltrane to Jack Kerouac. Sadly, Terry was diagnosed with schizophrenia shortly after joining the RAF, and spent the rest of his life in hospital.

David’s feelings of being an outsider in the world inspired him to create universes in his mind.

Feeling isolated and adrift, David used art as therapy, expressing the visions in his head, acknowledging that, though he didn't feel lonely, there was a loneliness in his work.

David lived in various different cities and spent more time exploring "obscure places" than he did in the music scene.

He had no intention of buying a house and prefered a nomadic life with constant change – He lived in LA because he hated the city and he wanted to see how it would affect his writing and moved to Berlin after that. 

In Berlin, he wanted to create a new sound, and went into the studio with no preperation.

According to David, he wasn't very good at being in social contact, and fter gaining international fame and success, he moved to Berlin for a new, more low-key start. Over the course of two years, he recorded three albums; Low, Heroes, and Lodger.

David was a lot more private when it came to sharing his paintings and sculptures with the world than he was with his music.

David wasn't as confident with his visual artistry skills as he was with his writer, and his paintings were very personal, often centring around isolation. You can check out some of his fantastic paintings here.

David said that when he met Iman, his life became rose-tinged.

When asked about love in the early days of his career, he described it as a disease; something to keep a distance from to avoid it getting in his way. But when he was introduced to Iman he said he was, "smacked right in the face and it was all over," and he reevaluated his approach to work so he could spend more time within the marriage.
