Daredevil season 1 has brought us so much. Many are even heralding it as Marvel’s greatest accomplishment. It’s shown us a closer street-level look into the MCU. It’s given us the greatest villain from any Marvel product. (Between Thanos and Kingpin? Let’s be real, who’s more interesting.) It’s saved the Matt Murdock character from the horror of the 2003 movie. Avocados at law. All of these things have made it an incredible series with so much potential. But-
Where to go next?
With Fisk in prison, Daredevil’s biggest villain is behind bars. They killed of Leland Owlsley, another cool villain. They introduced neither Elektra nor Bullseye. The problem is, the story can’t end here. Matt’s only just got his costume! This list will give you the top 10 best Daredevil characters to bring into season 2 and beyond.
10. Melvin Potter/ the Gladiator
Yes, yes, I know. Melvin Potter is already in Daredevil. He was the ex-employee of Fisk who made the red Daredevil suit. Pretty cool. What you probably didn’t know however, is that he is actually a villain-turned-hero character in the comics. Just like the show, he was a clothes designer and secretly a villain. He eventually turned away from the dark side and became one of Daredevil’s biggest supporters. It’s not surprising he was in season 1, as he was one of Daredevil’s first villains. He is one of the most likely on this list to be in season 2. As long as his character is confirmed, i’m going to assume he’ll be a hero and a Daredevil supporter, in one way or another.
9. Kristen McDuffie
Kristen McDuffie is a very recent character who first appeared in Mark Waid’s run in 2011. She was Matt’s love interest during that time. But I’m more interested in her chemistry with Foggy. The show needs a more light-hearted female character, because, let’s be honest, Karen’s next arc will probably not be super joyful. She has the fact that she’s a newer character going for her, but at the same time, the character’s sole reason for existing was to play off of the whole “I’m not Daredevil” thing. That will probably be an arc they do in the last few seasons, in something like Born Again. So while she is a newer and funner character, her background and purpose just doesn’t fit to where the show is in the considerable future. Don’t rule her out for season 3-5 though!
8. Mister Fear
You know the Scarecrow from the Batman comics? Just imagine that, but more Daredevil. There are two main iterations of this character, Zoltan Drago, and Lawrence Cranston. I think they will go with Cranston, since he’s less fantastical, has more history with Matt, a bigger potential for flashbacks, and a newer character. This character would fit perfectly with the theme of fear on the show, especially since his powers are essentially fear gas. This is a character I can see them bringing in in the near future. Maybe not as a seasonal villain, but as more of midseason villain with a three-episode arc. This character also has high potential for seasons 2/3 because of his history with Matt and maybe even Foggy that they’re going to want to dig into in the near future. That leads us to…
7. Maggie Murdock
OK, this character is all but confirmed. This is something they’re definitely leaning into for season 2. We’ve already heard her voice on the phone, and there have been way to many cryptic references for them not to do this. Maggie was Matt’s mom and Jack’s wife who suffered from anxiety and depression. She ran away when Matt was just a baby to become a nun. There is no way they’re not going to do the main characters mother! Her arc with Matt will lay out his internal conflict for season 2. In the first, it was, “Do I or do I not kill Fisk.” This season, it will be, “What do I do about my mother?”
6. Typhoid Mary
If there’s one thing Matt Murdock has, it’s crazy ex-lovers. Literally. Mary Walker is a seriously mentally ill mutant with low level psionic powers. She’s been featured in many different Marvel comics, specifically Daredevil, Deadpool, and various other X-Men storylines. She has schizophrenia with three personalities: Mary Walker,Typhoid Mary and Bloody Mary. Technically they’re all the same person, but they couldn’t be more different. Mary is her normal pacifistic self, Typhoid is her adventurous and violent personality, and Bloody Mary is her psychopathic, homicidal, bat-shit crazy personality. While you may think her mutant origin makes her Fox’s character, and off-limits for Marvel, her origin story is in fact because of Daredevil. When Matt accidentally injured her while looking for a villain hiding out where Mary worked, her mind split, vowing never to be hurt by another man again. This is a character I would love to see, purely because we haven’t seen too many completely insane characters in the MCU.
5. Stone
This is another character we’ve already seen. Kind of. He appeared in the end of episode 7, “Stick.” If you didn’t know, Stick is the leader of Chaste, a group formed to fight the Hand. Stone is Sticks protege in Chaste. His real reason for being on the list is I really, really, want to see Chaste and more of the Hand before Iron Fist or the Defenders. The Hand is a japanese ninja-terrorist association that has existed for thousands of years. It has been suspected that Madame Gao and the Iron Fist series will both tie in with the Hand. What I would really like to see is for Stone and the rest of the Chaste plus their mortal enemies the Hand be villains to both Daredevil and Iron Fist before Phil Coulson assembles the Defenders to fight them. How badass would that be? Superheroes vs Ninjas?
4. The Punisher
You remember Punisher: War Zone? Yeah, me neither. All you need to know was that it was the last time Marvel will ever do an R-rated movie. (Of course, Fox hasn’t tried it, which is why they’re taking their chances on an R-rated Deadpool.) This is kind of a shame, since there’s no good way of doing a PG-13 Punisher movie. Oh, I know! What about Daredevil? It’s TV-MA, super good and successful, and on Netflix. While I would love to see Punisher get his own series, this also would work well. This whole season has been about Matt’s decision not to be a killer. Well, Frank Castle is the exact opposite. He has several interactions with Daredevil in the comics, plus, he’s a perfect candidate for the Defenders show. They could always introduce him in Daredevil seasons 2-4 and then give him his own series.
3. The Owl
Leland Owlsley was a series regular this season. He is also one of Daredevil’s biggest villains in the comics. Knowing that now, you’re probably wondering, “Then why did they kill him?” Well, it added to the tension and drama of the final episodes. But don’t worry, they have a backup plan. Owlsley, while still being a sassy bastard, was significantly older than he is in the comics. While that added to the whole “secretly evil financier white collar criminal” vibe, and gave a more realistic take on the character. Leland also mentioned a son, “Lee,” who is probably Leland Owlsley Jr. Marvel’s plan was, if Daredevil went well, (which obviously it did) to have Lee Owlsley Jr. return to Hell’s Kitchen and adopt the more ridiculous side of the Owl persona. His abilities come from this owl serum which makes his bones lighter so he can fly and also gives him finger-claws similar to Sabertooth’s. Kind of weird and a little to literal, but he is definitely an important piece of Daredevil’s history. I’m counting on seeing him in seasons 2 or 3.
2. Bullseye
Well. Here it is. Anyone with half a brain and knowledge of the 2003 Daredevil movie knew this was coming. Now, Bullseye is one of Daredevil’s biggest villains. Why wasn’t he in season 1? Some are even claiming the sniper who shot those cops was him. Surely a TV show telling Daredevil’s origin would include one of the largest figures in his rogues gallery. Well, all I’m going to say is Colin Farrell. His adaptation of the character was so terrible that it left a scar on the Bullseye name and on the viewers minds. However, after seeing that first season, I can say that I trust Marvel and Netflix in whatever they chose to do with the character. On the other hand, I’m a little relieved they’re leaving him to the second season. Before they can get to costumed villains, they have to get past costumed heroes. Bullseye is a character that should only be seen once Matt has fully adopted the Daredevil persona. The concept of the character is something fairly simple: an assassin who never misses. His past is shrouded in mystery, and I think Bullsye could add a new flavor to the Wilson Fisk character. This is someone I assume to see very soon. Definitely in season 2.
1. Elektra
You hear Elektra, you think Daredevil. You hear Daredevil, you think “and Elektra.” Well at least I do. These two characters are so intertwined it’s unbelievable. It’s even debatable who is more iconic: Daredevil and Elektra or Daredevil and Kingpin. There are even whole series where the two of them share the title. But the’ve shared more than just a title across the years. Elektra Natchios is the daughter of a greek diplomat and Matt Murdock’s girlfriend from college. When her father died, she began to train with Stick and the rest of the Chaste. However, Stick eventually realized her hate for humanity was too much, and expelled her from the Chaste. In retaliation, she went behind his back and began to train with the Hand. During her training she descended deeper and deeper into the darkness before leaving the Hand to return to New York as an assassin. In the show, however, there was only one mention of her, in a college flashback, where Foggy called her the “hot Greek girl.” It can also be noted that ever since college, Matt has had trouble holding down a relationship. This is another character with high potential for flashbacks, since she knew Matt and maybe Foggy in college. Elektra is another character whose good name was sullied by the 2003 movie. The Jennifer Garner character was just- horrible. I have high hopes for Marvel’s adaptation that I am sure too see in season 2 and beyond.
Closing Notes- What Season 2 Will Look Like
Taking all of this into consideration, my hope for season 2 is that Daredevil will get a slightly longer season- maybe 16 episodes- and add the characters of Elektra and Bullseye as regulars. I would also like to see Mr. Fear and the Owl as villains with 2-3 episode arcs. My general idea for the season is that Fisk will escape prison (or run a criminal organization from within prison, which ever is cooler.) and higher Elektra and Bullseye as competing assassins to kill the Daredevil. This season would hopefully also introduce Maggie Murdock to allow for Matt to have an internal conflict. The flashbacks would mainly focus on Matt and Elektra’s relationship, and also Foggy’s rivalry with Lawrence (Fear). The present day would focus on Kingpin in or out of prison trying to take back his empire, and Leland Owlsley Jr. trying to take his place as Hell’s Kitchen’s crimelord. This would be my ideal season of Daredevil.
