On this day, In 1991 Bernhard Langer wins the “Million Dollar Golf Challenge”
The Nedbank Challenge belonged to the Langer in 1991 On this day, in 1991 Bernhard Langer won the Nedbank Golf Challenge in Sun City, South Africa. As always the event was held at Gary Player Country Club. Langer shot a par 72 and held off Mark Calcavecchia’s late charge in the final round to win the $1 Million. Langer’s 16-under-par 272 was five strokes better than Calcavecchia’s score and broke the tournament record of 274 on the 7,729-yard course. In the first three rounds of the event, the German shot 68,65, and 67 to build up a heavy lead going into the final round. On the Sunday final round it probably looked like Langer coasted to the finish with a par 72. Even after surviving a rain delay, he broke three records on his way to the win. Langer, Calcvecchia…not finished with the Nedbank Challenge With this victory, Langer joined South African David Frost and Seve Ballesteros as two time winners. From 2010 to 2012, a separate tournament for senior golfers was held concurrently and called the Nedbank Champions Challenge. At the first Champions event in 2010, it was Jeff Sluman who won the senior title. In 2011, it was the 1991 runner-up Mark Calcvecchia who took home first place honors. In 2012 in a very fitting way it was the 1991 Champion Bernhard Langer who won. To this day, Langer is the only man to win both the Nedbank Challenge and the Nedbank Seniors Challenge.
