5 Reasons Elle Woods Is A Feminist

On the surface Elle looks like what we have been condition to think, “a dumb blonde with big boobs.” But beneath those luscious, well conditioned locks lies a sharp mind. Not only is she the president and smartest girl in her sorority, she manages to score a 179 on her LSATs in order to get into Harvard (that’s point shy from a perfect score). Though people initially dismiss her when she arrives to Harvard Law she proves that when she applies herself she is the smartest person in the room.

One of many wonderful traits Elle possesses is her positivity. Though she becomes an outcast at Harvard, viewed as too bubbly, and no one can get past her California tan she doesn’t let the haters get her down. Hard work, success, and Bruiser are her ingredients to having a good time while at school. Though they hate her Elle doesn’t become bitter towards them, she feels sorry for them. They would rather judge her for her outward appearance instead of try to get to know her. At the end of the day blondes have more fun.

Along with her wavy beach blonde hair is the stereotype that blondes are vapid and selfish. This couldn’t be further from the truth for Elle. We initially see Vivian Kensington as a “man stealer” and the girl that needs to be beat. Though she sees her as a rival for Warner’s fickle affections, Elle does her best to get along with Vivian. The two initially bond over supporting each other in the field, protecting other women from being mislabeled, as well as Elle’s cute pup, Bruiser. She helps manicurist, Paulette, stand up to her ex, get her dog back and get a date with the hunky UPS man. Now that’s a wing woman I want on my side.

Her ex Warner and Professor Callahan both look at Elle as a sex object. Warner cites this as the reason he can’t marry her. People will view her as too sexy and he needs “a Jackie, not a Marilyn.” Professor Callahan even promises to further her career if she sleeps with him. Even the female law students view her as someone who uses her sex appeal to get ahead. This depresses Elle as she thinks no one will ever take her seriously. After a pep talk from fellow blonde and professor at Harvard Law, Professor Stromwell, Elle realizes if she quits she proves everyone right and the patriarchy wins. So she does the one think any of us would do in this situation: she wins the biggest murder case of the year by proving that Chutney didn’t shower. Because someone who has had 30 perms in her life should know that intact curls and murder don’t mix.

A mistake many “girl power” films make is that the heroine has to “beat” a man in order to be respected. Much of the negativity feminism gets is that its viewed by many as replacing the patriarchy with matriarchy aka women will treat men in the same way men have treated women for thousands of years. Elle initially needs a man to define her life and future. But after discovering her true power she realizes she doesn’t need to be an arm piece, she can work alongside men in any field she chooses. Even her romance with Emmett doesn’t take center stage in the film. Rather she looks to him as a mentor in a world she’s unfamiliar with. He in turn supports her fully in her career path. The last film ended with Elle looking at the White House as her future home. Elle Woods for President 2016!
