The problem is it could either look alright or look like a minstrel show. There’s a fine line.
Response to Why The "Fake Geek Girl" Meme Needs To Die:
I do get what the article is trying to get across. However, there is such thing as a fake, in all sexes. The “fake geek girl” meme started out as a way to poke fun at the “special snowflake” dichotomy. These were people who believed they were superior to others because they like something the other person does not (“She wears short skirts, I wear t-shirts”). This type of behavior is incredibly snobby and childish. It does nothing but isolate oneself, and that goes for men and women. However
The meme became mean-spirited very quickly. In so many branches of culture-politics, music, art, writing, or business- women have had to constantly prove themselves a worthy opponent to men. Now, in a subculture that has been defined as one of acceptance, one that will embrace the underdog when they have no where to go, I am shunned and berated. I am constantly quizzed on obscure questions about my favorite characters, told that my costume makes me look like a whore (then why the fuck did you draw it that way?) and humiliated for loving something passionately. I don’t agree with everything the author has to say and I do believe she hasn’t done proper research. That being said, in some of these little comics I can see a lot of the pain I’ve gone through.
