A Sydney woman has been charged after allegedly orchestrating a fake harassment campaign against herself which resulted in the wrongful arrest of another woman.
The 29-year-old was arrested on Wednesday morning and charged with a raft of offences including making false official instruments to pervert the course of justice and making a false accusation with the intent to subject another person to investigation.
Police said in a statement that the woman had started to receive threatening text messages on her phone in May this year. More came in July.
On Aug. 21, the woman reported to police that "a box containing several items including photographs and a written death threat" had been left at her property in St Marys, Western Sydney.
Police investigated and subsequently arrested a 51-year-old woman at a home in Blaxland five days later. She was taken to Springwood Police Station and issued with an Apprehended Violence Order.
But when police investigated further, they found "telecommunications evidence and CCTV" that allegedly showed the 29-year-old woman was responsible for the threatening activity.
Police will allege in court that the campaign was an attempt to frame the older woman, as a "form of revenge over past court matters".
The AVO proceedings against the 51-year-old woman have now been withdrawn, and the 29-year-old was refused bail to appear at Penrith Local Court on Wednesday.
