Fire crews spent Monday morning removing graffiti with a high pressure hose at the makeshift memorial for murdered Melbourne woman Eurydice Dixon in the park where her body was found.
“Police will ensure the markings are removed as soon as possible and the investigation is ongoing,” a Victoria Police spokesman said on Monday morning.
Victoria Police chief commissioner Graham Ashton told ABC News Breakfast it was "terrible really, shocking" but that there was a lot of CCTV in the area which he hoped would help police find the people responsible for defacing the makeshift memorial.
Thousands of people have expressed interest on Facebook in attending a vigil at the site, one of at least 15 planned for Monday night to pay tribute to the 22-year-old.
Dixon's body was found on the Carlton North soccer pitch by a passer-by shortly before 3am on Wednesday.
Dixon had performed stand-up comedy at the Highlander Bar in the Melbourne CBD on Tuesday night. The event finished at 10:30pm, and police allege that Dixon was attacked on her way home.
Jaymes Todd, 19, has been arrested and charged with the rape and murder of Dixon.
He handed himself in on Wednesday night after CCTV footage was circulated by police and, after a brief hearing on Thursday, will appear again in court in October.
