This City Councillor Wants To Give Away Free Tampons

"It’s insulting that the Liberal party would try to use this pathetic proposal to say that they care about equality for women."

Sydney city councillor Edward Mandla wants to make sanitary products available in public spaces for all females, particularly homeless women.

The Liberal party councillor, who once moonlighted as a radio DJ hosting a weekly trance, progressive dance and happy hardcore show, said American studies showed 86% of women had been caught without the menstrual supplies they needed in a public space.

"I'm a father of eight and my household has got pads everywhere," he told BuzzFeed News.

"From shoulder pads to breast pads to sanitary pads, I mean I'm tripping over them."

He said he was was inspired by New York City council's initiative to provide sanitary items to schools, homeless shelters and prisons, and plans to introduce a motion to council on Monday, which includes details on how many tampons a woman uses per month.

"The City of Sydney is flushed with cash and this needs to be done in all of the council's buildings for all the City of Sydney staff and it would only cost $7 per staff member," he said.

But Mandla will face opposition from City of Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore who dismissed the motion as a "half-baked stunt".

"It’s insulting that the Liberal party would try to use this pathetic proposal to say that they care about equality for women," Moore said.

"If they really want to address equality they should fix the gender pay gap, reinstate the funding they’ve cut to childcare services, women’s refuges and domestic violence services and abolish the GST currently placed on sanitary products."

Moore also pointed out the city's homelessness services already provided sanitary items for homeless women, but Mandla claimed that "not every homeless person is at a shelter all the time".

"They walk around, they're in public spaces, they use council libraries," he said.
