    Start at the bottom of the High Street, south side of the train tracks, for a real taste of Greece. Simple on the outside, flavoursome on the inside describes not only Gabby’s décor, but the tempting dishes on offer. Whether it’s a mezze or traditional keftedes (meatballs) you’re after, Gabby's has got it.

    Feeling flush? Just head to the 5th floor of the Doubletree by Hilton. The Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill up there looks out over the Brayford and gives some of the best views in town, as well as some of the fanciest food. Think bread baskets, candlelight and some brilliant beef. But if hand-reared prime steak isn’t your thing then the cocktail bar is pretty magnificent too.

    The Wig & Mitre is not only a delightful watering hole with original beams and fireplace but also a stellar eatery for pub grub and the finest Yorkshires in all of Lincoln. Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, they could challenge Yorkshire's own for best pud.

    Foodies rave about the Jews House in Lincoln: not only is it towards the top of Steep Hill (don’t forget trainers if you're walking up – it's a 34% gradient in places!) but the various awards speak for themselves. If I had to pick one item to try, it would be the melt-in-the-mouth Lincolnshire lamb, but if you want to push the boat out you can't go wrong with the full tasting menu.

    Pies, ale, oh and a ghost or two! At the top of Steep Hill is Browns Pie Shop, known for two things. Mostly it's for the best pies around, but also that it is one of the most haunted places in the whole of Lincoln. So be warned if there’s a small boy dishing up your grub (known as Humphrey), he’s probably been there a lot longer than you’d think…

    14. Handmade Catalonian delicacies at Olivaries.

    Olivares, next to the Castle, is a welcoming Catalonian invitation. The cool wooden interior, handmade by owner Nicholas himself, seats an exclusive four tables. It's well worth trying to get one – the best tapas and sangria in town here here, and the refreshing lemonade hand squeezed by his wife Lucia available, is the perfect drink to sip on while enjoying the view.

    15. Spicy Meatballs at Cafe Zoot.

    Nestled amongst the boutique shops, Zoot is great at lunch for a quick bite. The spiced meatballs in a thick and peppery tomato sauce would be my pick. The restaurant also becomes fabulous at dinner when the candles come out and the wine flows. With good food and better company – what more could you ask for?
