7 'Bucket List' MLB Ballparks

The new Major League Baseball (MLB) season is underway and it’s sure to bring lots of excitement throughout the year. While it’s fun to root for the home team (if they don’t win it’s a shame!), there are lots of other great venues to check out across America. Planning a summer road trip? Be sure to check the home schedule for these must-see baseball venues:

1. Kaufmann Stadium (Kansas City Royals)

Home to the reigning World Series champions, Kauffman Stadium harbors one of youngest and most exciting MLB franchises. Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) member Trevor Vance maintains the Kentucky bluegrass playing surface and is widely known to craft unique mowing patterns in the outfield, such as the Royals crown jewel.

2. Coors Field (Colorado Rockies)

The “Mile High City” is a hitters dream come true. Expect a high scoring game with lots of home runs next time you visit! Not a fan of baseball? The Rooftop in upper right-field is better known as the party deck and featured a monthly concert series last summer.

3. Oriole Park at Camden Yards (Baltimore Orioles)

One of the most iconic stadiums in baseball, the one-time railroad center was transformed into the Camden Yards in 1992. About a 10 minute walk from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, the venue features a pristine natural grass playing surface managed by Head Groundskeeper Nicole McFayden, a STMA member and industry leader.

4. PNC Park (Pittsburgh Pirates)

“Steel City” is home to many iconic professional sports teams, but none of them have the view that PNC Park does. The “Buccos” are treated to a picturesque backdrop of the city skyline and its famous yellow bridges. Derek Hurlburt, Field Maintenance Supervisor and STMA member, carefully manicures the team’s Kentucky bluegrass playing surface.

5. Miller Park (Milwaukee Brewers)

Miller Park isn’t just known for its beer. The Brewers stadium features North America's only fan-shaped convertible roof, which is capable of opening and closing in less than 10 minutes. When watching a game, it’s nice to cool off with a beer as well as lower in-stadium temperatures!

6. Comerica Park (Detroit Tigers)

Famous for wacky promotions like “Christmas in July,” Comerica Park is an open-air stadium in downtown Detroit. Fun fact: Heather Nabozny joined the team in 1999 as the first female Head Groundskeeper in the majors and still holds that position today. She and her team manage the Kentucky bluegrass playing surface, one of the best in the country.

7. Dodger Stadium (Los Angeles Dodgers)

Did you know Dodger Stadium boasts the largest ballpark in MLB with a capacity of 56,000? It is also the third-oldest stadium in baseball and features Tifway 419 bermudagrass overseeded with perennial rye. What does that mean for the players? More consistent and safe playing conditions year round.
