Ahead of Fleet Week in New York City, four photo-journalists joined the uniformed men and women of the USS Bataan to share their stories on Instagram.

I was really excited that many of the Marines and Navy personnel I photographed use Instagram, so I was often able to tag them. For years, many of the people I photographed didn't have access to the media I worked for, and as a result didn't see their images published. One of the most exciting things about using social media, is that it allows me to share the pictures with the people in them.

Here's a look into life on the USS Bataan:

"Pictured here is Corporal Lawrence of the Machinegun Section of Weapon Platoon in 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines, Kilo Company, with a tattoo on his arm of the Marine Corps Eagle, Globe and Anchor, the 0331 machine gunner job designation number and belt fed rounds symbolizing his dedication and love for machine-guns, with are belt fed crew served weapons... Also the horn in the picture is for Lawrence to relay orders to his Marines that serve in his section and it serves as a parody of sorts."

"This photo was during the exercises the crew on the USS Bataan were doing with the LCAT watercraft (that's the big ass boat with the Humvee on it) to practice docking it inside the ship, maneuvering in and out of the ship as well as transporting personnel and vehicles safely."

"Starting with the green rope, it's actually the French Fourragere. A special award given to 5th and 6th Marine Regiments for their heroic valor and opening a can of whoop ass with the French during World War 1. The braided rope and spike represents the relentless fighting spirit and courage both Marine infantry regiments have shown and continue to display to this day in any conflict. I still have my French Forragere to this day."

"He's one of the sentries safeguarding the entry point to the flight deck just in case something goes wrong or someone wants to jump overboard or if the ship is under attack and the enemy send troops to take and/or destroy the ship and the crew. Captain Steve Rogers ain't on the ship so it's just this sentry, myself and the Marines that'll have to defend it lol!!"

"Besides an infantry Marine’s flak jacket, Kevlar helmet, weapon system and knowledge of his job, there are some essentials they rely on to either pass the time, bond together, or to hold information about their day-to day routine and job. In this picture are some of those essentials, like a can of Copenhagen tobacco dip, playing cards for whooping ass in spades to pass the time in the field and note taking gear (thats the green book at the bottom) for jotting down notes whether it be knowledge, updates for work, etc..its an Marine Corps-style daily planner for infantrymen."

"So after we pulled into port after traveling from Virginia to NYC on the USS Bataan, you already know the Marines made a beeline straight to the hangar bay, so they can finally get off the ship.. For some Marines , this is home.. For others it's like Disneyland and they can't wait to see this beloved city."
