12 Things I Have Learned About Life Since Going Away To College

We all remember the day we moved away from home and ventured out into the unknown world of a four year college or University. All of the movies and songs had prepared us for the experience of a life time; the stories we would talk about with our old college friends while drinking white wine and hiding from the kids 15 years from now. But while I sit on my dorm room bed, eating my Doritos and stressing out about my not so distant future after college I realize that college wasn't what I expected. However, there are 12 things I learned that I will carry with me throughout the rest of my life.

12. There is nothing better than fuzzy socks and not wearing a bra

At the end of a long day of classes and work, going back to your room and putting on a pair of fuzzy socks and taking off your bra is like winning a million dollars... well not really because a million dollars could take me to Europe, but it's pretty close.

11. Laundry is the devil and it always will be

When you're a kid your laundry is magically taken from your room and replaced the next day clean and neatly folded. Without your magic laundry fairy, aka mom or dad, Laundry is the dreaded weekend chore. I think we all know the struggle of college Laundry rooms. Like, can you not take my wet clothes out and set them on top of the washer to start your own load? I was on my way down.....

10. "Finding Yourself" is an excuse to do stupid things

I think I may have justified staying out until 6 am and then going to work at 8 am, jumping a fence and running from the cops at a party, being "that" girl at a sorority formal, and spending all of my food money on alcohol with the phrase: "I'm finding myself". That's a load of crap. I was being a stupid college student and creating those forever college memories I can never tell my kids.

9. Being alone is not a bad thing

Sometimes its nice to be alone, stay in your pjs all day, watch netflix, and eat junk food. In an environment filled with people, it's hard to find that "me" time.So cherish it when you have it.

8. College parties are like a rite of passage

Be honest, college wouldn't be college without the parties. And you aren't a real college student until you take part in the Thursday through Sunday festivities. It is college law that you must have a hangover at least once; and even that is just the minimum.

7. Living with people is hard

I have had some roommates from hell and some roommates I absolutely loved. However, there is always bound to be something about the people you are living with that really gets under your skin. But it's important to remember that you aren't perfect either. At the end of the day, your roommates are all part of the college experience.

6. Alcohol is expensive

I still can't figure out how people drink every night. I barely have enough money to buy my books. Sacrificing your need to be drunk for your many responsibilities is not always the easiest decision.

5. The high school drama doesn't stay in High school

We have all had that moment when we realize some people never grow up. No matter how old you are or where you go, there will always be at least one person who isn't ready to give up the high school drama. That's right people, those girls will follow you through out life. But the good news is that it gets easier to ignore them and feel pity for them.

4. It isn't like the movies; It's a lot harder

The movies never show the late night study sessions before finals that have you living in the library and ripping your hair out. And walking around in sweatpants and uggs every day and not having the energy to do your hair and makeup. Trying to get all of your work done for classes and your on campus job is enough to make you pass out at 10 pm. Just planning to go to a party makes you tired.

3. I love my Mom

It's okay to miss your mom and want to spend time with her. You eventually reach a point in your life where you value your mother daughter time. You create a new and different relationship where you can almost be friends. Your mom was and forever will be your number one fan and cheerleader. I am proud to show her off to my friends. And I find myself calling her more and more just to say Hi.

2. My college best friend is irreplacable

No matter where life leads us and no matter how far apart we end up in distance, she will always be my college best friend. No one can replace her or the memories we have created together. And I will try my hardest to keep that friendship throughout the rest of my life. I am thankful for her and every thing she has taught me and done for me.

College has for sure been a roller coaster. But I'm glad I bought a ticket and strapped in for the ride. I have made so many memories and friends and I will never forget these years. My life has been forever changed by the people I have met and the experiences I've been lucky enough to have. So here's to the good ole' college years because they come and go in the blink of an eye.
