You would be amazed at how well a simple “please” and “thank you” in the native tongue will be received; people truly appreciate effort. Who knows, this could even lead you to a local off-the-beaten-track gem that you may never have found on your own! Buy a guide book or, better yet, use the internet to brush up on a few basic phrases. You really have no excuse.
