#Blackout 2015: Black Is So Beautiful

If you haven't heard of #blackout by now, you probably didn't get an invite. The only requirement needed to participate? Having black heritage and being proud to show it off.

Blackness isn't often represented positively in the media. And on the off chance that people with melanin shake up Hollywood's beige palette, they don't necessarily encompass the full spectrum of black diversity. With such a lack of representation and with so many negative and stereotypical images in society discouraging us from loving and appreciating dark skin, it's important to be reminded of the beauty of blackness.

According to brains behind the movement, expect-the-greatest and collaborators nukirk.digi.tal and blkoutqueen, they wanted to give people of African descent (from all walks of life) a platform to shine. This is why #blackout was born and perhaps why the movement went viral on Friday, March 6th.

To share #blackout's uplifting message, here are some of the highlights that made the day a success!

Thanks to those on the other side of the globe who got us ready to go,

And those representing for people with vitiligo.

Thanks to those whose melanin popped severely,

And to all the black beauties on the lightest end of the color spectrum.

Thanks to big beautiful black people,

And the mixed race girls loving every aspect of their heritage while shutting down the haters.

    Thanks to proud fathers,

    Fierce mothers,

    Fabulous grandparents,

    Freaking adorable babies,

And to those who made this a family affair.

Thanks to everyone who blessed us with their voices,

    Their art,

    And their poetry.

Thanks for representing those of us with disabilities.

    Shout out to the punks.

Shout out to those who stood for transgender visibility,

    And LGBTQ youth.

    Thanks to the Jewish brothers,

    And Muslim sisters.

    Shout out to the survivors,

    And their supporters.

Thanks to the cosplaying cuties, like Tiana

    And Harry and Hermione.

Shout out to the pop artists,

    The pale redheads,

    And freckled shorties.

Thanks for showing us black love!

And giving us inspiration to rock the boldest hair colors this spring.

Last but not least, thanks for reminding us why #blackout day is so very important.

#Blackout had so many participants and submissions that it continued into the weekend across twitter, tumblr, and instagram platforms. If you missed your chance to show your pride, the creators are currently planning a spring-themed version set for April 3rd, so it's time to up your selfie game.

Happy #Blackout everyone, and remember to stay melinated, hydrated and beautiful!
