Evolution is one of those things that everyone thinks they know about. But with lots of myths and misconceptions floating around, how much do you really know? Here are answers to some frequently asked questions on evolution.

1. Isn't evolution just a theory?

Well yes, but not exactly.

The everyday use of the word ‘theory’ means an idea, hunch, or guess. But a scientific theory is different - it’s an idea that has been experimentally tested. Evolution is a scientific theory and there is lots of evidence to support it.

2. If we’ve evolved from apes then why do apes still exist?

Firstly, we didn't evolve from apes (or monkeys). However, humans are closely related to modern apes. We shared a common ancestor around 5-8 million years ago, until the species split into different lineages. So why are there are still apes around today? One answer is “allopatric speciation”. This is when a single new species evolves in geographic isolation from its ancestor, with each group developing novel and distinct traits.

3. If you believe in evolution that makes you an atheist, right?

Not necessarily. The study of evolution focusses on how organisms diversified. It doesn't investigate the origin of life or challenge the concept of a higher power.

4. Doesn't evolution promote immoral behaviour (survival of the fittest and stuff)?

Nope. Biologists believe that evolution has shaped animal behaviour, but it’s society that decides whether certain behaviours are right or wrong. The term "survival of the fittest" is often confused with "only the biggest and strongest survive" or "every man for himself". However, in the context of evolutionary sciences "fit" means the most suited to the current environment.

5. Evolution doesn't explain homosexuality though.

Over 400 species show same-sex attraction (including humans). At first homosexuality seemed like an evolutionary puzzle to biologists. But over the last 20 years there have been loads of studies on the evolutionary origins of homosexuality providing various explanations for it.
