In Game of Thrones, Jaime Lannister never got the chance to go beyond the wall and experience devilishly frigid conditions. Well, Netflix's Against the Ice sees Nikolaj Coster-Waldau doing exactly that.
Based on a real expedition, it's a survival-adventure film set in the brutal sub-zero environment of Greenland.
It follows the travels and travails of two Danish explorers, Captain Ejnar Mikkelsen and his mechanic, Iver Iversen, as they wander the white wilderness in 1909 looking for a map that proves that whole of Greenland belongs to Denmark and not to the US.
.Seems people were excitedly waiting for the movie.
.It's a breathtaking movie.
.Yeah, that was heartbreaking.
.The coldness on the screen is palpable.
.Those deaths do hit hard.
.Nikolaj Coster-Waldau gives a terrific performance.
.That's quite high praise.
.The Revenant redux.
.Another movie it reminds you of:
.Aha! Charles Dance has a short role in this movie:
.As menacing as Tywin in Game of Thrones:
.Joe Cole from Peaky Blinders is marvelous in the movie.
.It's Joe Cole's character Iver who brings vulnerability to the story.
.The movie stands out among the so many "based on true story" films for being accurate to the original story.
.Especially when Bjorn died.
.Another strength of the movie is its cinematography that captures the ruthlessness of the Arctic.
.Something for the Poldark fans as well.
.The cold is not just a part of the environment. It's like another character in the movie that's ambushing the protagonists.
