10 Horror Movies You Didn't Know Were Based On True Events!

1. Psycho

Ed Gein, a Wisconsin man was arrested in 1957 after committing two murders and digging up the corpses of countless other women; who were said to have reminded him of his dead mother. He skinned the bodies to make lamp shades, socks and a woman suit in hopes of becoming a woman. He was declared insane and spent the rest of his life in an institution for the mentally ill.

2. Open Water

This film came from the true story of a married couple in 1998 that disappeared off the Great Barrier Reef. The couple were left behind while still underwater by a diving tour leaving without them. Their bodies were never recovered.

3. The Haunting At Connecticut

The family of Carmen Snedeker reported incidents in their Connecticut home during the 1980s. After the family reportedly started experiencing supernatural forces, John Zaffis, Haunted Collector, investigated the case into the supposed haunting.

4. The Exorcism Of Emily Rose

Anneliese Michel was diagnosed by doctors with grand mal seizures, her behaviour seemed to worsen once she started attacking family members, drinking her own urine and fitting around religious objects. Priests performed multiple exorcisms and Anneliese died in 1976 of pneumonia.

5. The Hills Have Eyes

The real life story this film is of Sawney Bean, a Scottish born man circa the 15th - 16th century. Bean married and had 14 children, many of which were the product of incest. The teal explains that family were cannibals, who lived in caves and reportedly killed over 1000 people.

6. The Shining

Estes Park Hotel in Colorado, or has it came to be known The Stanley Hotel over the years had many people claiming that they had witnessing paranormal activity in the hotel.

7. The Girl Next Door

Sylvia Likens, was left with a family friend, Gertrude Baniszewski, while her circus performing parents traveled. Gertrude terrorized Sylvia much like scene within the film, which ultimately lead to Sylvia's death. Prosecutors who worked on the case called it "the most terrible crime ever committed in the state of Indiana."

8. A Nightmare On Elm Street

Wes Craven the director of the film, himself did admit that he was somewhat inspired to create Elm Street, by an article he had read in the L.A. Times, which detailed how a certain group of Cambodian immigrants all died while having nightmares or night-terrors.

9. Jaws

This film is arguably influenced by a series of great white shark attacks off the New Jersey shore in 1916. This series of attacks sent people into a complete panic, threatening tourism in the area like in the film itself.

10. Banshee Chapter
