Exotic Fruits From América

The complex of american neotropic, gave us a lot of different plants with their own fruits. In some cases, they are known only by the inhabitants where they exist. Here is a little expo.

Granadilla (passiflora ligularis)

This is one of the passion fruits. Instead of maracuya, this is very sweet, and because of this, its juice is very soft so is prefered to eat natural.

Feijoa (Acca sellowiana)

Also named in spanish freijoa, feijoba or guayaba of Brasil. According to the place or variety of crop, the flavor can change from acid to sweet.

This fruit can be eaten in any form, natural, juice and even as ice cream.

Chirimoya(Annona cherimola)

The skin of this fruit looks like a green dragon skin. Is not usual the sale of this fruit when is fresh, because the skin is very delicate.

The pomace of this fruit is very sweet. The seeds should´nt been consumed.

Red pitahaya (Hylocereus monacanthus)

Instead of the chirimora, this fruit has a harden skin of red dragon, but they are not of the same family, in this case, the pitahaya is part of cactaceae.

Only the pomace can be consumed. The flavor is a soft sweet, not as juicy as yellow pitahaya.

Mamoncillo (Melicoccus bijugatus)

This fruit is a treasure for tourist when they travel to warm sites in central or south América, because this fruit has a citric and sweet taste; and in the moment when is tasted the people want to eat much more, untill the point that after 12 of them the tongue is a bit dry (this fruit contain some tannins)

*Is not recommended for children because the seed is too big to handle in their tiny mouth, and this can be risky for them

This fruit is form warm places the Orinoquia and Amazonia. The ripe fruit is very fresh, juicy and also dries the mouth. It is very delicated to be moved by car.

The seed that grow out of the fruit, is cooked to be eaten, this is known as caju almond.

Copoazú (Theobroma grandiflorum)

The copoazu is from Amazonia. This fruit is familiar of cacao, but instead of grains this one is famous because of its pulp.

The pulp is sweet and is used to prepare candys, jams, desserts and even liquor

Maqui (Aristotelia chilensis)

This berry is form Chile. It is sweet and had been consumed before of the colonial time.

Is used to eat it, in the chilean summer. The tender leaf are eaten in salad
