We spoke to many creative, Latinx bookstagrammers about how they use their platform to share their love of books and what they're reading these days. Be sure to go give them a follow.

About Me: I’m a classic Bronx, New York mix of Puerto Rican and Irish. As a native New Yorker, I love living and teaching high school English in the Bronx. I’m a self-taught-baker and you can usually catch me either: baking, reading about baking, or watching YouTube videos about baking for hours on end.

What Followers Can Expect: I bake something for every book I read! This Instagram started because I love fully immersing myself in books, so I just had to know what they were tasting as well. I read a mix of fiction genres (from thrillers to YA to dramas) and a sprinkle of non-fiction. You can expect baking challenges, tips and recipes, long reviews, personal connections to the books I read, and some sugary fun!

A Recent Book I Loved: Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo. This is my favorite book so far this year and has me hooked on novels in verse. This book is another reminder why representation in literature is so important. It took me back to my grandmother’s table of saints, to the fierce love of my suegra, to the stories of my mom from fire escapes in the South Bronx, and to the bond between my sister and me. Mostly it spoke to the importance of sisterhood — in every sense of the word — and how we must rely on the tenets of sisterhood until the world rights itself and evolves into a place safe for young girls to grow. I made a chess cake for it inspired by the chess motif throughout the book.

About Me: I've been a lover of books for what feels like my whole life. I've been an avid watcher of BookTube videos for a few years now and decided to become a more active participant in the book community by creating my bookstagram account in 2018. My favorite genre is romance, but I love to read different genres/age groups all the time. I try to uplift books written by BIPOC authors on all my platforms, especially YA/Middle Grade. I grew up with almost no books with characters that were like me and seeing more diverse books being published is so special and brings me so much happiness. I also have a BookTube channel where I do hauls, tags, or every once in a while, videos of bullet journal spreads.

What Followers Can Expect: I really don't have a theme to my Bookstagram, but my recent posts have been cover recreations, which have been so much fun to post! I used to do posts with lots of props and flat lay but it became a bit much. I'll usually post about books that I'm currently reading or mini book hauls.

A Recent Book I Loved: The Roommate by Rosie Danan. It's coming out September 15th! I've seen so many romance readers hype it up and in my opinion, it is well worth the hype. It's about a 27-year-old woman named Clara, who up until now, has lived a very safe life, but when her crush of over a decade invites her to stay at his home in California, she sees this as an opportunity to finally make her move. When she arrives, she finds out that instead of spending time with said crush, she'll be roommates with Josh Darling. Sharing a living space with a charming and handsome man is already well out of her comfort zone, but when she discovers who her roommate is, she begins to realize how out of her comfort zone she really is. This book was oh so good! The sexual tension was so palpable, the chemistry between Clara and Josh made me eager for them to finally get their shit together and just admit their feelings for each other. Oh, and the sex scenes were just *chef's kiss.* The dialogue was so much fun! One thing to note: I am a huge character reader, but I was actually so interested in this plot as well! The discussions of sex workers in the adult entertainment industry and how poorly they are treated was informative, and I loved that there was no shaming in this book.

A Recent Book I Loved: The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin. This is an adult fantasy and sci-fi, which are my two favorite genres, and it took me by surprise! N.K. Jemisin has such a unique and beautiful writing style. Jemisin gives us a character driven story with great representation and incredible world building. Do we really need anything else? This book has so many parallels to the world we're facing today and it really makes you think. Let's just say that I risked a sleepy work day just to stay up and finish this brilliant book. It was totally worth it!

A Recent Book I Loved: Running by Natalia Sylvester. I think many of us came to a point in our teens where our parents were no longer our greatest heroes. I know, for me, it was a matter of breaking away to rebuild a stronger relationship with them. This book intimately discusses this with a political spin. In Natalia’s debut YA novel, Mari just happens to go through all this while her father is running for president. She had seen signs but largely ignored them, maybe for the sake of the family or maybe because it’s more convenient to ignore hard truths. Mari must decide whether her beliefs are worth fighting for.

About Me: My name is Alexis, but everyone calls me Lexx. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY (and super proud of it!). I recently moved to Austin, Texas. My mom instilled in me a love for reading very early on and it's become a part of who I am. I love going to the library or a bookstore to browse and smell the books. A Recent Book I Loved: With The Fire On High by Elizabeth Acevedo. That book gave me all the feels! Acevedo's words are moving, inspirational and so in touch with today's young people — she's really just awesome.

What Followers Can Expect: Followers can expect mostly YA featured on my page — and a ton of cozy. I love creating pictures that make people feel relaxed and happy, pairing it with a good book that’s entertaining and representative of the world. But I’m not about toxic positivity either. A Recent Book I Loved: Lobizona by Romina Garber. I didn’t want it to end! From the first few pages, it was engaging and was set up to be an epic adventure — and it delivered. Manu is such a lovable character and her fierce attitude and determination was so refreshing to read. The slow burn (almost forbidden) romance was killing me in ways I can’t express. But the rebellion against social conventions like gender roles and heteronormativity was my favorite part. I loved everything about this novel.

A Recent Book I Loved: Vampires Never Get Old (anthology) edited by Zoraida Córdova and Natalie C. Parker. I have to admit, I was transported back to middle school and could almost imagine myself squealing with my friends about these stories. There’s something magical about it, and it’s not just the paranormal creatures hiding in its pages: this anthology brings some much needed diversity to the vampire universe. Seeing brown and Black characters, disabled bodies, and queer folks in these supernatural situations is something that I would’ve LOVED growing up and it's incredibly important that we're able to read it now. Make sure to grab a copy when it comes out on September 22.

About me: My name is Melissa, I'm 29, and I was born in Lima, Peru but immigrated to Miami, Florida in November of 2000 with my mom, brother, and sister. As a young girl in a new country, reading was my escape from the difficulties of day-to-day life as a Spanish-speaking kid living in an English world. I served in the Navy for four years in which again, my passion for reading acted as an escape while being out at sea — it was refreshing and a huge stress reliever. I graduated from the University of Florida with a BS in Sport Management, and athletics is something I am very passionate about. I live in San Diego with my husband (who is currently deployed) and my two rotties, Grizzly and Zilla. A Recent Book I Loved: The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennet. This was a beautifully written story about family ties. Bennet interlaces classism, racism, and colorism into her story is such a poignant way, that it will leave you turning pages while also trying to process these issues. There’s also a transgender storyline which was powerful all on its own and left me wanting to read a book dedicated solely to Reese. If you have not read The Vanishing Half yet, I highly encourage you to move it up on your TBR stack!

About Me: I’m a Chicana (Mexican American) born and raised in California. I read Latinx, Chicanx, and Mexican literature as a way of finding myself and to understand the beautiful struggle of belonging to two cultures. A Recent Book I Loved: Women With Big Eyes by Angeles Mastretta. It's a collection of short stories focusing on women in the early 1900s in Puebla, Mexico. This book is a beautiful celebration to the women who came before us.

About Me: I'm a project manager by day and avid reader by night. I started my bookstagram to connect with other readers locally and internationally. And this led to meeting my dear friend, Tasha from @tashabereading, with whom I co-host monthly bookstagram meetups in NYC. (At the moment, we are hosting virtual meetups every other month until social distancing is over.) Aside from the camaraderie and supportive community that I found on bookstagram, I also found my voice. So I not only use my platform for book reviews, but also for advocacy and online activism.

A Recent Book I Loved: Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. It's perfect for spooky season, which is fast approaching, and Latinx Heritage Month. The twists and turns in this novel were unforeseen for me. It was a slow-burn that picked up pace the deeper you went. And paired with the eerie tone, Silvia Moreno-Garcia sets the perfect stage for a chilling gothic story about family secrets, eugenics, colonialism, and women giving up the illusion of domestic bliss to carve their own path.

About Me: My name is Alicia and I am a Mexican-American book blogger and bookstagrammer from California. I have always loved stories and fell in love with books at an early age. With each passing year, I somehow find even more to love about them. I was introduced to the book community through blogging and became more acquainted with Latinx voices in particular through my involvement in the Latinx Book Club.

What Followers Can Expect: I strive to promote diverse reads with an emphasis on books by Latinx authors. I read anything from Middle Grade to YA to Adult novels. As far as genres, I gravitate toward fantasy, but you will find me picking up all sorts of genres. If it's written by an author of color and/or a Latinx author, chances are it's going to make its way on to my TBR. As a reader, I know we don't have a ton of say in what gets published, but we do have a say in what we pick up and promote. It's important for us to be deliberate when it comes to reading diversely. Recent Book I Loved: Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. Moreno-Garcia does so many things well! With this one, it's the slow build and the eerie atmosphere. I was particularly intrigued with the way Moreno-Garcia used colonialism as a backdrop to the story.

A Recent Book I Loved: A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine. I picked it up because I was in the mood for a space opera and at the time I saw that it was nominated for a Hugo Award, which it went on to win. It's a science fiction political mystery set in a world inspired by the Byzantium and Aztec empires. You'd think that it would be a dense book, but it was quite the opposite. It was fast-paced, thought-provoking, and very queer. I highly recommend it.

About Me: My name is Laura Nicole Rojas Pozo (aka Nicole). I'm a 22-year-old veterinary student from the Dominican Republic. I started my bookstagram a few years ago to share my reading experiences with readers all over the world due to my lack of reader friends. I also have a booktube channel where I upload videos about books, but those are mainly in Spanish, which is my mother language.

What Followers Can Expect: My favorite genre is romance and women's fiction, so my content usually gravitates towards those type of books. A Recent Book I Loved: On The Come Up by Angie Thomas. This was my first time reading Angie Thomas and words can't explain how much I enjoyed her writing and how she put into words such an amazing story. I loved Bri as a character. She was so empowered and committed to make a name for herself and become someone in life. The rap was phenomenal and so full of emotions that I wish it was a real song. It had a bit of romance, which I really appreciated, and it obviously focused on deep and important topics such as racism and discrimination. Totally recommend!

About Me: I'm a Dominican poet, reader, and writer living in New York City. Ever since I could remember, I've been an avid lover of words and of how they make me feel like I am not alone. In middle school, high school, and in college, I found a home in libraries. I found a mentor in every English teacher who saw something in me. This year, I am a part of Alegria Magazine's The Latinx Poetry Project, a poetry anthology with over 45 other Latinx poets on themes of immigration, social justice, and feminism. A Recent Book I Loved: Lima:: Limón by Natalie Scenters-Zapico. I've just got to say WOW. The way Zapico uses language and these play on words in her poetry made me melt (both as a lover of poetry and as a poet). Not only that but the IMAGERY...THE IMAGERY IS OH SO GOOD and the integration of lyrics of songs from her childhood was just so well done. It is stunning in its sadness because it is just so brutally honest. Reading through her poetry is a mix between questioning the cultural normality of femicide and machismo while dealing with the specific theme of immigration and the border. I was so impressed that I have no words, speechless in my awe of this brilliant piece of work.

About Me: My name is Adriana M. Martínez Figueroa and I am a writer, editor, and sensitivity reader from Puerto Rico. I am also the creator of #ReadLatinx, which is an online campaign that spotlights books written and/or illustrated by Latinx authors. You can find seasonal lists on my blog going all the way back to 2018, and I've interviewed Latinx creatives on my website for Latinx Heritage Month.

What Followers Can Expect: You can expect to find mostly books by Latinx writers on my Instagram, as part of my work involves promoting books authored (and/or illustrated) by Latinx people. I prefer a natural aesthetic, making use of my backyard and places around the house as backgrounds. I'm a spontaneous poster, which usually means I'm inconsistent with my posts so when I feel like uploading I try not to stage the pictures too much (I've tried and that just isn't my style).

A Recent Book I Loved: The Verging Cities by Natalie Scenters-Zapico. It's a poetry collection of violence that's overt and implicit. There are many things left unsaid, allowing the reader to create their own conclusions as to what the writing is about, much different to Lima :: Limón. Here, the reader must read between the lines: is the lack of overt violence in this piece mean there isn't an act of violence happening? This collection is a story of the US Mexico border, particularly of Juárez. It is protagonist and ghost. It is victim and survivor. It is chain link and as real as every detained person. The Verging City is about the sun beating down on the border, and the dangers that lurk in the night. It is witnessing generational trauma be revisited upon an already traumatized body.

A Recent Book I Loved: Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo. This has got to be one of the best books I have ever read. Acevedo's writing is gorgeous, and the book is written in a stanza format. The story was beautiful! It was so descriptive and had me missing DR and craving some sancocho. Reading this book made me so incredibly happy, and this is why representation fucking matters! I know this may not make a lot of sense, but please read this book. You wont regret it.

What Followers Can Expect: The genres of books I cover have evolved and expanded over the last few years with a concentrated effort to read books by authors with marginalized identities. A Recent Book I Loved: Knitting the Fog by Claudia D. Hernández. It’s a bilingual memoir of poetry and prose by a Guatemalan writer, published by The Feminist Press, and one I think everyone should read! It is a story about growing up in Guatemala, in Mayuelas and Tactic, pueblos named and central to the narrative. You can feel the hot humidity of Mayuelas, the cool air of Tactic. It is a book I've been waiting to read my whole life.

A Recent Book I Loved: Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. It was an absolute 5-star read for me, and I am beyond excited that it is getting an adaptation at Hulu! A Recent Book I Loved: Cantoras by Carolina de Robertis. I knew I was going to love this book within the first minute of reading. It's a story of queer love, found family, and revolution. In the midst of a dictatorship in Uruguay where citizens live with the fear of kidnapping, rape, and torture at the hands of their government, five queer women find sanctuary in Cabo Polonio, a quiet fishing village on the Atlantic. Far from the prying eyes of the military and their nosey neighbors in the dangerous city of Montevideo, the women are allowed the freedom to love and live as they’ve always wanted, as Cantoras. Carolina de Robertis is a gift. Her prose is so poetically beautiful, and she breathes life into her characters and setting. The wants and needs of these women felt incredibly real. Throughout this journey the Cantoras became my friends. I laughed with them, I cried with them, and even got mad at them. (I was really out here cackling at their jokes and then balling my eyes out. She was an emotional rollercoaster!)

A Recent Book I Loved: A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara. Without being hyperbolic, this is the literary love of my life. I cannot stop raving about this masterpiece. It is the most gorgeous meditation on life, love, and pain that I have ever read. There are a lot of mixed feelings about the book’s difficult content, but if you can make it through the dark moments, this book will teach you about unconditional love, dignity, friendship, privilege, and maybe even something about yourself.

About Me: My name is Cristina and I’m Puerto Rican but I was raised in Virginia. Right now, I’m in New York City getting a library science degree, which means quite a few of the books I read are library books since I’m 1) a working student on a budget and 2) want to show my appreciation for how amazing the NYPL and BPL systems are. Hamlet is my favorite Shakespeare play and my bookstagram name comes from that famous soliloquy everyone knows ("to be or not to be"). Like everyone on bookstagram, I love to read, but I specifically love finding books written about Latinx authors in any genre.

What Followers Can Expect: I love almost all genres! I really don’t have a focus, but I am generally drawn to literary fiction written by authors of color, speculative fiction, and queer fiction. Bonus points if it’s some mix of all three (like Vanished Birds by Simon Jimenez, for example, or Catherine House by Elisabeth Thomas)! I post a review of every book I read, good or bad. If I have a backlog of books I will post every three days, but during the pandemic when my reading attention has been a bit scattered, I’ll try to post at least once a week, hopefully twice. I almost always have my houseplants in my photos because they’re my babies—Helga, Olga, Boris and Yasha. They all have Eastern European names because a friend of mine who is Russian gave me the original Helga (She's the one with the rainbow flag), and it’s kind of an ode to her.

A Recent Book I Loved: Catherine House by Elisabeth Thomas. This book follows Ines, a grumpy, irritable bisexual slacker (I love her) and her three years at Catherine House, a college-type institution that allows you to attend for free with just one catch — you must completely cut yourself off of the outside world and make Catherine House your whole life for those three years. This novel is a strange, hallucinatory experience that has less of a standard plot and is more of an exploration of what isolation does to the early 20s mind, especially in this environment where "work hard, party harder" is the motto and excess is the name of the game. Ines is a detached narrator with a troubled past and an inability to see any kind of future for herself, and Catherine House capitalizes on that, trying to pull her deeper into the mystery of the strange experiments with a matter called plasm that they’re known for. I really enjoyed it.

About Me: My name is Neycha (pronounced nay-chuh) and my pronouns are she/her. I am a 29-year-old, bisexual Puerto Rican from Massachusetts, currently living in NYC with my girlfriend and our two cats. I moved from Boston right before the quarantine (talk about bad timing), and the ample time I had on my hands is what inspired me to start my bookstragram. A Recent Book I Loved: Mexican Gothic by Silvia-Moreno Garcia! I finished this book a couple of weeks ago, and I’ve thought about it almost every day since. It is, as the title suggests, a gothic novel set in 1950s Mexico about a young socialite who, after receiving a disturbing letter from her newlywed cousin, ventures to a rural mining town to visit her cousin at her husband’s estate and gets swept into the mystery surrounding his family and their creepy mansion. The book is deliciously dark and eerie with beautiful writing and a brilliant heroine. It’s everything I love in a book!

A Recent Book I Loved: Juliet Takes a Breath by Gabby Rivera. I am always looking for books that represents and validates diverse identities. Being Latinx, I know what it feels like to have to navigate between two worlds while trying to find your own voice and create your own space in the world. Juliet Takes a Breath is a coming of age story about a Puerto Rican, self-proclaimed baby dyke from the Bronx who just came out to her family on the day she is scheduled to go to Portland to intern for her favorite author in hopes of learning about feminism, women's bodies, and her own sexuality.

A Recent Book I Loved: Everyone Knows You Go Home by Natalia Sylvester. Captivating, beautifully written, and haunting. Early on, I knew that the echoes of the story and characters would stay with me for a long time. It is a whole experience. This novel follows two generations of a family in alternating timelines, depicting their experiences with immigration, border life, and secrets. I was invested in both timelines throughout, right until the end. This is a layered family story where the borders of past and present, physical and imagined, are crossed over and over, always for hope and love.
