Apparently You Can Dye Clothes Pink With Only Avocado Pits, So I Tried It For Myself

This project cost me $3 and was pretty fun!

Today I learned that you can dye clothing a beautiful blush pink using...avocado pits?! Yes, you read that right.

After doing some research, I realized that this isn't exactly a new trend. It's been around for a while! Many people have written about dyeing with avocado pits, and because I'm a fan of the blush pink color (I use it as an accent color all over my apartment!), I decided to try this out for myself to 1) see if it works and 2) to indulge in a super cheap quarantine project.

Here's just one corner of my place where I used the blush pink as an accent color.

To do this, you'll need three or more avocado pits. I started off by grabbing mine and plopping them in a large pot.

I brought the water to a boil and waited for it to turn a perfect ruby color. At first, I wasn't sure if it was working, but once I grabbed a white ladle and checked the water, I saw it was slowly turning pink!

After about 25 minutes, the water became a gorgeous ruby color. This is how you know it's time to stop boiling and let your dye water cool down.

I let the water sit overnight so that it had time to steep. When I woke up, I put two white tank tops and one dingy white sports bra into the pot. I wanted to revive my sports bra to make it less sad looking and hoped dyeing it would help.

After eight hours, I removed the articles of clothing from the pot of dye and hand-washed them in cold water.

Here's what my clothes looked like before they were dyed, and here's what they looked like once they were washed/still wet. Clearly, the dingy bra is a different color than the whitest tank top on the left. I was skeptical about the coloring, but I decided to save my final opinion for when they were fully dry.

The following morning, once everything was dry, I saw that the color had changed a tiny bit. Here's how they turned out:

To make the pieces of clothes pop a little more, I turned to another TikTok trend I'd seen around since quarantine began: tie-dyeing using bleach. I had toilet cleaner + bleach on hand, so I used the fork spiral method, added a bit of bleach, let it sit for an hour, then washed it out. Two out of the three turned out AMAZING. The shirt on the right looked just okay.

My favorite piece ended up being the ~upgraded~ Calvin Klein bra because it looked so bad before! But now it feels fresh and new. Overall, this is a really creative and extremely cheap project! If you're bored and have the supplies on hand, I recommend it. The results are totally worth it.
