Sometimes, a character is able to pull off a convincing redemption arc and earn their happy ending. But sometimes they don't deserve it because it's too little, too late to make up for a slew of bad deeds.

Let's face it, there are characters who straight-up don't deserve a happy ending, but get one anyway. Remember Jim from Passengers?

He ruined Aurora's life when he woke her up, but got a happy ending anyway because she fell in love with him.

Amanda Waller from Suicide Squad was technically one of the good guys, but her methods were completely amoral and manipulative.

Perhaps you agree with me that Professor Snape's last-minute redemption in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 doesn't make up for years of abusive treatment toward Harry and other students.
